d-slr stands for digital single lens reflex.

Its the type of camera like this :

"slr" is usually just a term used now for 35mm film single lens reflex cameras.

Its very hard to say which is the best brand. stick with the big names, Canon, nikon, fuji. (if your thinking about SLR's)

For compact cameras: again, canon, nikon and brands like panasonic and sony are quite good.

What do you want from the camera- do you want to use any manual features (or learn how to) or do you just want to point and shoot?

My old Nikon Coolpix took a brilliant picture, with great colour and sharpness.

I would recommend going for the big Japanese brands, who are very well established in the photography side of things, I'm currently using a casio digital compact for home, and they don't seem to be as good when it comes to lenses and the like.

What's your budget because what some people would call a good camera could easily be in the 000's, while others could all a £200 camera good.

What do you want from a camera? Do you want it all point and shoot, manual features or a mixture of both?

Is high zoom/high MP important?

You'll seriously be struggling to get a good SLR camera for that price, unless you go for second hand but I personally wouldn't trust that as much.

I haven't looked around properly since March/April because that's when I bought my camera with about the same budget. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18. It's got pretty good reviews and at least was about the best for the money, but there could easily be something better out there now. Can either use it as a simple point and shoot, or manually adjust settings like the focus, shutter speed etc.

I'd rather buy second hand and get a better camera. As long as the seller is reputable and doesnt sound like a chav. Unless the camera has been used profesh then it wont be worn out or anything silly like that.

And i'd go for a Canon.

for £350 id say get a 2nd hand canon 400d (preferebaly a referbished one, as these have renewed shutters as the actual shutter on the camera has a life span of about 100,000 shots)

Spend your money on lenses, that really is one of the most important things. With the 400d, it'll be a slightly older camera, but very good nonetheless- and perfectly enough for you to learn to use the SLR as well as have it on auto mode as well.

On ebay there are bundles for about £400 with a bunch of other crap that'll do you well to get going;!

Personally I wouldn't waste a lot of money on a camera until you are well practised at taking photo graphs. 90% of the photos people post on forums are average/pretty poor...only a few people really put the benefits of a DSLR to work. I'd buy something nice and cheap and get good/creative with that.

If your asking "what D-SLR or SLR means?" I really wouldn't be rushing to by one, you'll spend your whole life on auto mode getting marginly better snaps than a decent compact.

Also, a hint. Google is alot more efficient and accurate at answering such questions...

If its your first camera you might not be better off with a d-slr. but if you really want to learn how to use one, there are loads of great offers on at the moment, i have a nikon d60, and i think jessops are doing it for about £390 with bag and card.

Honestly, wouldn't the best thing to do would be to look at camera review sites? Theres dozens of them. Just type the camera name followed by "review" and they'll all pop up, including test shots in all different kinds of situations/lighting etc.

They also tell you stuff about compression ratios etc. A camera could have 20MP, but if the compression ratios are high, then those 20MP mean jack shit.

I have a SAMSUNG NV8 black point and shoot camera which i love. It has a new kind of menu function which

is so much easier to use, i think its the way forward with the compacts.

I'm no pro at photography, i dont have the technical patience with them, but my boyfriend is a proffesional photographer and has tried to teach me many times but even with his £3000+ cameras my shots arent half as good as his when hes using a crappy SLR. Its all about technique, if you do get a DSLR then it would be a good thing to do a short course to learn how to use it. Or you might be good at that kind of thing and teach yourself and take some good shots!

Sounds to me like you want a DSLR rather than need one. Chances are you'd be flabbergasted by manual features just now and wouldnt use it to potential.

I can highly reccomend the Fuji Finepix S5600, which has a decent MP, 10x optical zoom, manual settings as well as full auto. Looks a bit like a DSLR but it's not. Chances are it'd be fine for what you want to use it for.

I've got a Nikon D60 camera. Had it for about a month now and still learning how to use it. As you can see from the shot of the Mk1 above I'm still pretty shit but its still early days yet for me. I've got photography books and stuff and trying my best to learn how to use the camera's qualities better.

Agree 100% with this view, my old Nikon compact, has never taken a bad picture, all fully automatic, point and shoot

if you want a camera for taking good pics, get a decent compact (it will take better pics 90% of the time, and be more featured than an SLR of a low budget)

to get an slr to be able to cover the range of functions that is bundled into the latest compacts, would mean you need to spend at least a grand

I would say unless you're really into proper photography like setting up all of the aperture and stuff like that, you can probably get very good results with a decent compact camera.

Like people have said before, maybe try a camera comparison website or 'Stuff' magazine maybe? And all the big brands should offer a suitable piece of kit: Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Olympus, Canon.

I have a wee Nikon I love it! It's got some really good night modes that makes photos very cool/blue.

i have a samsung nv10, which is amazing for its size...10MP camera!

and a canon eos 20D for the daddy shots

tbh...theres very little difference in performance when tri-pods are used....apart from mahoosive price difference
