Help please, I'm trying to get the Mk1 all legit for Edition this weekend, got it MOT'd today, and just taken out a new insurance Policy.

Trouble is i haven't got tax on the car, and i probably wont get a cover note until at least saturday, probably monday which obviously is a little too late as i need a cover note to proove my insurance when taxing it.

Is there a way i can take the log book and MOT certificate to my local DVLA office and they ring up or what evs, or am i fucked?

Also... have thought about just taxing it online, but again, it says UPTO 5 WORKING DAYS til it comes through the letter box, and also can take upto 30 days for my insurance to go on the database...

Well if you get the paperwork on Saturday most post offices are open to at least 12. So you can get it then. Otherwise you are a bit stuffed I'm afraid.

Can you get the insurance company to email you a copy of the insurance certificate? You can then print it out and then show that?

I've done it using a faxed cover note from an insurer before but that depends on the mood of the person in the post office as some will tell you to get lost.

95% will tell you to get lost I wouldnt even consider wasting your time. Email is fine but even some insurance companys have watermarks on there insurance certificates these days which means you cant even get an email copy. Really frustrating from a car sales point of view.

My insurance companys only emails PDF certificates you can request a certificate to be posted but when you do its just printed in B&W and on normal paper.

I was a bit dubious about this but on every occasion the post office has accepted it and so has the police.

Sweet :) I was going to suggest a printed one, that's what I've done before

I'm in a similar situation at the moment, just waiting for a covernote.

I rang the DVLA today and asked them about it and they told me no photocopies and no printed emails, it had to be an original document produced by the insurance company. I guess you were lucky!

I suppose it depends on luck of the draw at the post office, but the person that I spoke to at the DVLA was so adamant that it had to be an original document that I didn't even think to try.

If my covernote hasn't arrived tomorrow, I'll ring my insurance company and ask them to email one to me and try my luck.

but how are they going to know if the insurance people printed it off and posted it to you or you just printed it off yourself?

All seems stupid in this day and age anyway, all you should need to take is the renewal form and they should check the rest from the computer database the police use to check for insurance on cars. Same for MOT. The insurance certificate I get from Brentacre would be very easy to forge using nothing more than microsoft word

Printed ones have always worked for me.

Hayesey is right though, get busy on word for 10 mins & you could make yourself a printable cover note that would pass the eye of 80% of post office counter staff

go to the dvla website! as long as you have you V5, they'll electronically check you're insure and MOT'd using the same system as the rozzer do when they pull people. pay and bingo you're taxed they have sent mine out By 1st class a couple of times so it should be with you by the end of the week. IF not the police don't normally do you for not displaying if you say you bought it on line and it hasn't arrived yet...... as long as you HAve aactually bought it on line!!!
