hello people, so I'm new to the site and new to Polo's, I'm looking into buying a 100bhp 16v 6n and was wondering if people could give me some tips on what to look for (parts changed at milages, common faults, that kinda thing).

currently i have a Bora TDi which, tbh I'm gunna miss when its gone, but we have a Touran coming into the family tomorrow so i fancy a little fun.

I'm part of section5 forum and the good people on there told me this site was the way forward for any Polo advice (which makes sense i guess)

Welcome to Club Polo mate, I have a 6n 1.4 16v. Its ALOT of fun to drive, very surprising what it can do for being just a 1.4.

Common things to look for is rust, 6n's are pretty bad for it. I'd recommend a higher milage 16v as the gearboxes are pretty weak and a higher milage one is more likely to have had the problem sorted like what mine has.

thanks for the advice given so far will be really helpful, so.... when i take one for a test drive what should i expect in terms of a healthy or fubbered gearbox?

also I've heard the brake pedals are quite soft on these polos is this true, and if it is is there a way of sorting it out.

I'm well excited for the little beauty, been scouring sites looking for one... oh does anyone have any site to reccomend looking for one other than pistonheads, autotrader and the bay?

think thats enough questions for one post, sorry if I'm annoying anyone just want to make sure i get the right one.

All the 1.4 16v Mk4 Polos have big one piece bumpers. The smaller 2 piece bumpers are only fitted to 8v Polos.

So be careful if you are looking on Autotrader and the like as I have seen heaps of people advertising their 1.4 8v as a 1.4 16v.

If unsure ask for a picture of the engine, if it has a big silver rocker cover with "DOHC 16V" emscribed into it then its a genuine 16v Polo.

The 16v also comes as standard with:

• 14" or 15" alloys (14" is the smallest wheels that will fit over the brakes")
• 16v badges
• Big bumpers
• Clear indicators and side repeaters
• Sports interiour

If it is missing any of those it is more than likely not a 16v.

big thanks to everyone for there help and knowledge, I'm going to look at one 1st thing tomorrow so ill let you know how i get on should be picking it up wed morning if i like what i see. looking forward to joining the club and cant wait to get some coilies on one.

ok so this how the day went

up on autotrader for 2k with 57k on the clock

after an hour and a half of driving we arrived at the garage and 1st impressions of the car were high it was gleaming not alot i can say but almost perfect interior and exterior.

car had been stood for a while so asked the guy to get the jump pack out after i had give the gears a good playing with (as people described the g-box as chocolate box) felt a little slack.

powerflow(blowing from cat) and KnN were found so expectations dropped a little also drums and calipers were painted red.

car was started and a few cold rattles soon disapeared, which resulted in a smooth sounding running car.

had a chat and found there was no service history, so phoned the dealers and discovered last VW service was end 2005 with 27K on the clock. 2 owners from new on the log.

high pitched tone started coming from the alternator, (i think that was it anyway) brake system and ( ! ) was flashing constantly, guy said it was because the battery went dead.

the guy left me and my mate talking, after 10 mins i looked down at my feet then under the engine and and found green coloured oil running towards my feet (car was on a incline). found the oil/liquid was coming from a part kinda behind the passenger wheel. and so we left. oh and the oil was really clear and looked brand new. is this the gearbox?

never told the guy so next people who go and look will see not everything is as it seems.

Depends on the condidtion of the bodywork, MOT and so on. Probably close to the £2k mark though.

Front fogs were an optional extra, I don't have them on mine which I'm glad of as personally I don't like them.

I do 500 miles a week in mine and get on average 42-44mpg and thats with pretty hard driving. Insurance wise they are a high group at group 10. tax your only £120 a year since its just a 1.4 and servicing, if your handy with a spanner £60ish should see a full service.

cheers again mate. yeh servicing wont be a prob, I'm not a mechanic but i capable of that. 40_42 seems good enough for me although I'm getting average of 60 in the bora and the tax is £115. still parts are gunna give me cheaper fun and upgrades, plus tyres and all that.
