More than 1000 Subaru owners and thousands more fans have celebrated the life of Colin McRae this weekend.

A convoy, which at its peak stretched 30 miles with an estimated 1100 Subaru cars, left Colin’s home town of Lanark on Saturday morning, led by his father Jimmy McRae. Nine hours and 300 miles later, it arrived at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury, having been cheered along the way by thousands of fans who stood on every available motorway bridge on route.

“Literally every bridge had people waving and cheering us along with many hanging the Saltire from the railings.” said Grant Hendry, who led the McRae Gathering convoy. “It turned what was an already memorable event into a truly amazing and emotional occasion.”

The convoy re-gathered at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury on Sunday morning, before being led up the M40 by Colin McRae’s original 1996 Impreza rally car. In a fitting finale to the event, a sign almost half a mile long and made up of 1086 Subarus spelt out COLIN MCRAE and the Scottish Saltire in a new official Guinness World Record – smashing the previous record by more than 800 cars. The cars then broke a second Guinness World Record by creating the largest parade of cars as they left the Prodrive test track.

It is estimated that the event has raised nearly £40,000 for the McRae charities.

I remember week the it happened The Nascar Champion Jimmie Johnson was being interviewed just before a race and was truly gutted with the news:(

my boss went to this in his & he said it was bloody awsome

on the motorway there was so many of them in the convoy it took them two hours to do a bit or road which should have taken them half an hour lol

I'm not overly impressed with how much they raised when it must've cost that to fuel the cars,but i am impressed with the photo of his name - That's really quite some tribute.

More so would be a focus on other british talent,as he'd want,both impending and missed - which leads me to raise my glass again to Richard Burns,who also had to leave with so much left to offer.

They could have fuelled the cars and not donated to charity instead?

Eh? No,vice versa. Left the cars at home,put just the fuel money in the pot,and with that raised a higher figure. Possibly much higher.

But that would be missing the point,i dont see it as just about raising money - it was a high profile tribute,and an admirable one in my view.

my mate at work went. Said it was a mental day out and the Prodrive facilities were spotless.

Do believe there was a richard burns appreciation gathering or something titled like that elsewhere in the country.

When we were convoying back to the boat from edition we kinda fell in with a convoy of about 10 scoobs with the mcrae stickers on, i knew there must have been something on.
