Hey guys sorry to jump in here with a question right away but I'm after a bit of advise.

I've got a D plate beige polo 1.05 C (estate stylee hatchback) and I'm looking at putting in a different engine. The car only has 22k on the clock from new so its not like there is anything wrong with this one but i just cant stop myself lol

So what engines will fit and wire up with out any major fabrication etc? to be honest i wouldnt mind a diesel engine from one of the newer polo's if thats possible?

so help and advise please guys :-D I'm normally a ford fan so i know very little about these cars in terms of engine conversions etc.

GT conversion from a mk3 is a relative piece of piss (and cheap as chips!), as for something newer, I'll leave that to be answered by people who have more knowledge than me (could be almost anyone)

well when i say newer..i mean newer than 1986 lol

To generalise,pretty much any petrol Polo engine from 1975-2005 will go in,some easier than others.

I have a 1.6 from a '98 Polo in my '85.

I also like the idea of a diesel,but the 1.9 would be big hassle,and i expect the 1.4td would have its own challenges too.

So what went into gettin the 1.6 in your '85 polo then mikey?

Well I'm not after doing anything really hard, so the simplest options will be best. But id like something 1.4 or maybe 1.6 in there, My main concern is the gearbox, will the more modern ones fit and what about linkages etc?

The 1.6 isn't easy to do properly.

The 1.6 can be done quite easily,but yeah the 1.4-ABD bolts straight in as a straight swap. Using a Polo GT cam and fuel system with that MK3 Golf engine,you've got the easiest way to reasonable performance.

That depends on the tools, skills you have. Its not actually hard its just abit time consuming when compared to the other straight swap conversions but it is worth it for the 1.6

Ok so the consensus seems to be 1400 ABD bottom end with a GT top end which will give me 1.4 mpi engnine, anybody know any performance type figures for that setup? and what kind of fuel consumption it gets?

Will the existing gearbox in my car fit or am i going to need the GT's gearbox as well?

I dont mind getting my hands dirty but this is a learning curve for me so nothing to hard lol

You dont have to use a GT box but i would with the 1.4. Shorter ratios so they go nicely.

Using the ABD bottom end over a normal 1.3 will give you about 2bhp more BUT fair bit more torque which is what the GT lacks.

So standard you might be looking at 78- 79bhp, (75bhp standard)

With mods like

Free flow exhaust

Golf gti AFM

Chip

Dewedged Throttle body

better air induction

You might break 100bhp with a decent cam. and a decent torque amount.

You should see 35 - 40mpg with the GT box and you might get 45mpg with the 8P box from a CL 1.3 mk3
