8v or 16v

Featured Replies

ok club polo, think i may cause some conflict here, but its good to know before i make my decision.

so really I'm looking for a 16v as I'm down sizing from a Bora TDi which isn't all that slow for a standard motor. the only problem is there's doesn't seem to be many on the market right now so i'm considering a super tidy 8v model.

1. will i regret getting an 8v model?

2. other than performance what will i wish i had in the 16v model?

3. can 8v performance be cheaply enhanced?

cheers phil.

depends what 8v you get mate. 1.4 are fiarly nippy and a 1.6 isnt slow to say the least. no difference between a 1.6 gl other than 16v bumpers.

bumpers, bigger brakes possibly abs/p/s c/l leccy windows (depending on 8v spec) different shaped tailgate with lip, smoked rear clusters darker interior trim with better seats and obviously more power than the 8v and probably a few more bits i can't remember

oh yeah front and rear anti roll bars fitted to the 16v too!!

ok thanks i think ill keep looking for 16v unless the right 8v turns up....

argh i don't know...

check the cars for sale section, theres a 16v in there at the moment (scratched passenger side but may still be worth it)

as for 8v, iv got a 1.6 8v and i really love my car, it does all that i ask of it and I'm only doing simple mods to it...it really depends what you want to do with your car, if your gonna follow trends, then 9 out of 10 8v's end up getting fitted with 16v bumpers, so you might aswell get the 16v.

personal choice and preference

good luck finding your car

the 8v engine is indestructable

Id go for the 16V, the girlfriend has one for her first car and it was a lot of fun. Seemed really good on fuel too, driven an 8V and it was just plain boring

the valvers are overpriced imo

they're made out to be something special but they aint, can get alot more car for your money

howler mate very true, as mad about polos that we are they arent the bollocks but my 1.6 8v does me very very nicely thanks

valver FTW! You wont get the smiles per miles as much in an 8v. Yes i have driven both 1.4 and 1.6 8v when i was looking for a polo :o . but they are better priced than the 16v.

16v = the daddy of the mk4's

but like many have said you have to pay for it

1.6 8v all the way :D:D:D

my mate had a problem with his polo recently and called some garages (his family friend) n apparently 16vs are more epensive to sort!! Just what I was told.

8vs are slow and pretty basic but with 16v bumpers imo they look much better, the 16vs are a bit nippier and probably be my choice if i were to buy one now tbh but i do love my 8v and they are mint on fuel and as far as i can tell pretty indestructible

I've got a 1.6 GLX 8v and my car is pretty quick. I've seen off a few PUG 208's and some 207's. Think I'm pushing about 80 bhp now??

Few light mods. Big drinker on the petrol though. Sometimes I wish i had a valver but other times I'm really happy as it looks identical to a valver anyway (16v bumpers) + I have fog lights! 16v dont

You know the 16v are better :)

having owned both id say 16v all the way :D

valver ftw :D

my valver has fogs :?

its obvious the 16v is the better choice but not worth the money

valver ftw!! what would u get then howler for the money a valver is if you think they are soooooo over priced?

proberaly a 106 gti, something along them lines

the car i actually want is rediculously over priced for what it is! i was just saying that for what they are, just a 1.4 16v hatchback, they are over-priced. there are plenty of other 1.4 16v hatchbacks on the market for less

its a dub tho mate...they hold their value.

yeah thats true but for that kind of money i'd want something a little more special and newer

I'm not saying they aren't good cars! far from it, i would have my 8v if i didnt like polos, I'm just saying its not the car i would choose to buy. I'm not slating anybody for buying a 16v! thats the car you have chosen to buy and its down to personal taste and yes it is a better car than the 8v, its quicker and has more gadjets

eventually i would like a civic ek9 type R and they are rediculously overpriced!
