G40 pistons

Featured Replies

Jus whipped the head off my pourly G40 and- as suspected- piston number one has been severly damaged. I'll obviously look into why this has happened, but i was just wondering if VW made any pistons similar to those of the G40? What are G60 pistons like? 1W?

I know that accralite make the 1341 forged items but I'm just trying to weigh up my options.

Cheers,

Tom

Just did a bit of research and it appears standard G60 pistons are 81mm dia. As the Accralite ones are 77mm I'm guesing the G60 items would work. Anyone been down a similar path before?

I'd have thought you'd have problems running a 81mm bore on a PY block?

more than 1341 and it gets into the water jacket i've been told

Yea thats what i would have thought, just an idea. Could really do with another set of G40 psitons. Anyone got some?

is the block wall ok???

Yes it's scored. If i can find G40 pistons i'll use the GT block I've got up in the garage which is low mileage. Id love to have the PY block bored out to suite some forged pistons but there's no way i can afford those atm.

gt one will need drilling/tapping for knock sensor and oil drain - they supposed to be less strong with less bracing though.

thought about a bottom end instead?

Have you looked into piston prices? Accralite + JE pistons are quite expensive when compared to others like wossner.

Also any thoughts on the cause of this damage?

Drilling + tapping the rear of the block for the knock sensor is the least of my worries to be honest mate.

Tav -I haven't looked in to the price of Wossner pistons but i'd be interested to know how much they sell for. However i haven't really got the money at the minute so maybe something for the future.

As for the cause of the problem - i'm still looking into it. Most likely incorrect ignition timing/ detonation/ excessive boost. I've also found it difficult controlling under-bonnet temperatures with the turbocharged setup, which probly contributed.

wossner i think are £4-500 a set

Yea, thats a good price.

wossner i think are £4-500 a set

£499 at the following site, available in a range of sizes which is good: http://www.tsr-performancestore.com/polo-g...stons-714-p.asp

I am sure I've heard of them being cheaper else where.

Still after some stock G40 pistons really. Can anyone help?

I know of an engine block + crank + pistons ... quite high mileage but was fully working before removal. Might be for sale for the right price?

I have three pistons + rods in the garage...

  • Author

How good are the three you've got? Would you be interested in selling them?

i have a full set of used rods if you intrested, pm me mate,

( i have fully rebuilt my engine now with all new parts so these are no use to me)

Just the rods, no pistons?

They look ok? Same scenario with this engine as yours, bore 1 is scored and I am missing the piston that used to live there.

I can take some pictures of them if you want?

I'd sell them on yeah...not sure on price....wouldn't be looking to rip you off.

My situation is i have 2 damaged - unusable - pistons. Pictures of the 3 you've got would be great, but i'll only need 2.

i have the piston heads, but they are not in a condition for them to be reused. there is major pitting etc from poor timing by the previous owner. i rebuilt the engine completly for peice of mind, and to ensure my g lasts.

let me know if you want any parts?

If you can stretch to it then the best bet is to get the block rebored and get some forged pistons. As mentioned above you can go to 77mm bore which is the largest safe size.

77mm Accralites are available for £600-650. Steve that used to run PSD had a few sets left when i last spoke to him. They also lower the compression ratio further!! Expensive but the best imo.

Wossener do a variety of sizes. A company in Brum quoted me £420 including delivery for a set of 77's. These do not lower the CR though.

Another thing to bear in mind is the cost of replacing the bearing shells, seals etc... It all adds up!!

Using the 3F block is a possibility (i have a set of standard PY pistons in good nick if you need them) but it's not the permenent answer if you want peace of mind when turning the boost up. The forged jobs in a py block will cruise big boost/temps!!

Either way hope you get it sorted out...

EDIT: just another thought! - You say its piston 1 - how is the water gallery on the corner of the block by P1 looking? Theseare often coroded (due to neing nearest to the water pump) and can cause P1 problems...

Cheers mate. I cant dispute that re-boring the block and fitting forged pistons is the best option, i'm just not sure i can afford it at the moment.

Just out of interest can you remember the name of the company in Brum that gave you that price?

Accralites don't lower the compression as far as I am aware, the infact raise it to 9:1? Would have to have someone confirm the but I think that's the case...

Yeah, 9:1 C.R. with the forged pistons.
