I'm thinking of lowering the 6n, and I only want to go 40mm due to speed bumps etc.

depends on how old they are, they will just wear quickly as the dampers will be compressed constantly for longer

meh, dont believe the hype, i had them on my corsa and the dampers were fine. the car had done like 120000 when i put them on, and they looked like the original dampers, or at least, a very old set.

id just get coilovers tho to be honest, youl hardly notice a 40mm drop, it will just bring the bugger down to normal car height.

Or get the spring and shock kit for about £120 off Philj on here. You can get 40mm for the front and 40-80mm drop on the back as they are adjustable so you can play a bit to get the right height you want. Obviously coilies would be better for this but alot of people just run springs and shocks kits

lol - if the car had done 120k and the dampers looked like originals the reason the lowering springs didnt damage them is cos they were already DEAD!!

I've had springs on original shocks on front of my corrado for 4years. never had a problem

its just not worth putting lowering springs on standard oil bath shocks, it will bob around like shite and smack the bump stops all the time. just get a kit with shortened uprated gas shocks and springs.

I've been running 40mm springs with standard-replacement dampers for circa four years and 35k miles - and its still all good.

Main reason is because,for most of the time,the progressive-rate 40mm springs are actually softer-riding than the originals.

Seems people rightly hear that 80mm springs wear dampers quicker than standard,but then apply that knowledge to a question about 40s.

It isn't because they are standard dampers that they don't like lowered springs.

Dampers wear into the seals, and you'll see on the shock tube where the usual range of travel is. Above this you will see if the shocks are old the tube is pitted/dirty/rusty etc. When you lower the car you start dragging that through the seals, chewing them up and causing them to leak.

A lot of companys selling slightly lowered springs (20-40mm) will recommend fitting standard replacement dampers rather than uprated ones, to overcome this.

If you start fitting overly stiff springs then the damper fluid will start to overheat and you'll lose damping capabilities. To overcome that you need to fit uprated, preferably gas filled dampers, but that won't be required for anything designed for the road really. Uprated dampers are often just used to increase the effective spring rate of the setup and make it 'feel' a bit sportier than it really is.

my girlfriend has had 60mm/40mm lowering springs on her standard shocks for nearly a year and her shocks are still perfectly fine.

any lower than 40mm and it will fook your shocks

but as I'm also from stoke and mine is lowered 60mm front and 80mm rear you will be ok i hardly catch on any speed bumps

yes, they damage your shocks...i have ventura springs on stock shocks and i just can tell you that i haven´t shocks anymore lol
