Yeah thats probably it. You need to cut the plate yourself or get someone to do it for u and patch it up with weld. It's not a easy job like i say the dash need's removing and the outer wing. I'd do it properly instead of welding up the battery bay. There should be a hole in the battery bay with a drainage pipe attached which run's to next to the hinge on the door. Careful not to cause fire weldin

or i might just take him to the VW specialist near me, get a quote or something...

I took one of my polo's to a body shop, gave the guy £30 and he did a quick fix on a Saturday morning.

He blitzed the rust away with a drill piece, knocked through the damaged metal leaving a few small holes, he spot welded some 2 pence pieces over the holes and using chicken mesh and fibre glass he smothered the entire battery recession.

That stopped the problem.
