I am new to the forum, i am 16 and own a 1.3 mk1 golf but have been advised by others that this is the forum, that will be of most use to me. I am going to be getting a set of weber twin 40's from work as i work for burton power, and one of my mates there is selling a set for peanuts, i am going to buy them and refurb them etc with new jets, was wondering if anyone has an idea of what size choke, jets etc i need to suit my 1.3 which has had a minor head skim, also i am after a inlet manifold to suit them, but am struggling to find one, if anyone has one or knows where to get them from this would be very helpful and i would much appreciate it thanks guys

I'm no wizz with webers, dellortos i could tell you the jet sizes, remember jet sizes are relative to choke sizes, which are relative to power band and peak power etc....so check what they are first - depending on how far you want to get the power up/keep it torquey enough low down etc?

As above really everything is relative, but i would have thought you'd be using somewhere in the region of 28-30mm chokes.

cheers guys. i will tell my engineer all the details of my engine and let him sort it out he should kmow, anyone know where i can get the inlet manifold from in the uk, as i am useless and a bit cautious of buying from germany.

You will need;

THESE ARE DELLORTO NUMBERS! YOU WILL HAVE TO CROSS THEM OVER TO EQUIVALENT WEBER TYPES

28mm chokes (29 is the best but rare as hens teeth)

accel pump jets of no larger than 35

air correctors in the region of 180-200

emulsion tubes similar to 7772.8/7772.10 (may vary depending on carb types)

mains anywhere between 115 and 128

idle jets and airbleeds depends entirely on what carbs type you have and the number of progression holes

all engines are different and will require different jets depending on cam, headwork, manifolds, inlet tract length, trumpets etc!

29's aren't rare - you can still buy them straight off the shelf from dellorto.co.uk - on a standard engine go for 28's though i'd say also.

Those emulsions would be a good start - but if you're doing anything else to it, i'd suggest 7772.5's.

well on the second hand market anyway, or 7772.6s will suit. don't forget tho that the capacity of these engines are quite small for a pair of carbs. the biggest factor is whether the carbs were emission types or not, for example dellorto carbs with letters N, G, H or L were made for alfas and had different mods to the universal ones to improve economy.

out of interest what model carbs do you have twin40 racer?

I've got the universal performance DHLA's - (no letter with DHLA), yourself?

I'd personally not fit the 7772.6s unless it's a track, verging towards race engine... they're generally used on engines with more cc's/cylinder, lean low down and rich uptop. Though, i have a set that i'm yet to try in my own car.

yeah i had a sorg one first and got shot of it as soon as i realised i could get my hands on a dbilas one. try www.advancedautosport.co.uk for a manifold, the guys there have been racing and rallying polos for years and they stock loads of different tuning parts for polos.

DBilas make them up, my mate paid in the region of £150 iirc. Makes my Veedub motorsport one look a bargain at around £50.
