I fitted my mk1 steels on today and to my horror they wouldn't go over the front brakes, In panic I got a body file out and shaved the corners off the ribs/extremities of the caliper, no more than half a cm on one point, I took her for a test drive and all seems fairly well, but have I opened the door to anything life threatening?

i think everything should be alright as long as you havn't filed away the brake lines or anything like that..

even if fluid does start to piss everywhere its nothing a bit of gaffer tape cant fix.

Half a centimeter of the cast iron caliper is a massive amount - They cant've been more than 5mm anyway.

Cast iron is brittle,so if one goes,you'll get no warning.

Calipers were shaved on my Lupo for a good few years and they were fine. So shouldn't be anything to worry about as long as you've not damaged something you shouldn't have!

just fit a parachute on the boot, drag stylee, just in case like?
