I wouldn't say the 6N2 GTI. A lot of people snob over it in the VW scene and think it isn't good enough for some reason. It will interest people in the future though who come across them, especially considering a lot of people now don't know it even exists

future classics? any sporty model that is popular with the max power generation i would of thought. you just have to take a look back over the last ten years to see that. cars like the xr2, xr3, 205gti ect ect, all were popular with young lads that modified the shit out of them, they grow up and moved on and most of the cars were scrapped or wrote off leaving the rest to now be looked on as classics.

and if this did come to pass it would mean saxo's in, polos out i'm afraid.

for it to be a classic i would have thought it needs some sort of motorsport heritage

The car was the star for decades,but the 80s was the last one. They're no longer desirable when aged - they've turned into disposable goods,consumables,and they're all the same under the rapidly degrading over-recycled plastic cover.

I partially agree, but would have to add that its people more than the product which are letting it happen. More than ever, the car is a way of expressing how well you've done, a status symbol if you like. Once it starts to get on a bit, or isn't cutting edge, they want rid.

Either way, what is a classic? It has the oldies in the likes of Practical Classics magazine going scatty trying to define it. Many of the suggestions in this thread are valid to me, but most VW's will become 'classics' some way or the other, just the sporty ones will be considered so first.

and the intergrales are quite rare anyway very hard to find a decent shell

Nostalgia has to be the main factor.

Popular vans always have it - the Transit Connect certainly will.

My 23yo MK2 Polo coupe S never will - not even a mechanic knew what it was when it was in the spray booth.

The Ka will be a proper classic very soon.

future classics will be anything that is still standard. far too many chavs with bad taste pulling perfectly good cars to bits. i predict in the future we will all want old cars that are oem, and will struggle like hell to get them!

Also, i did think 6n2 at the start of this thread- only built for a few years so pretty rare etc already. in the future a 6n2 gti will be quite sought after i reckon (especially if it is oem!!!lol)

I saw a mk1 Fiat Uno Turbo yesterday on the way to work - "Wow thats a rarity!" is what i thought!

i think the insurance companys will give you a classic policy on any car 10 years or older

so i would say 90% of us are allready driving classics

any older car can be a classic but it just depends weather anyone has the will to keep it on the road the majority will be unwanted and scrapped

i think a lot of modern cars will die out as a result of complicated electronics and being virtualy impossible to work on so people just wont bother as much as they have in the past

i recon a lot of hot hatches will survive as track cars and things like the new mini/beetle/fiat500 will become icons but i don't see as many people being keen on rebuilding them in their garage
