Spam.

Featured Replies

I may be wrong, but it seems that a lot of unscrupulous spam is making it's way on here.

It doesn't concern me particularly, but I'm guessing that a small amount of people will be clicking the links available, 'cos they don't know better.

Additionally, I know it wasn't on here for long, but porn on the top of a new thread could get people the sack.

Is there anything to alleviate this?

Doesn't bother me at work, if I posting on here, click on a thread and my kids are around, what then?

No daft answers, but how does it get on here in the 1st place? Is it all checked 1st, or do we flag it as members?

P.S. how do we report these threads?

Okey dokey.

Cheers!

BTW, it's happening on a lot of forums.

there was the thread with the user trying to sell trainers and shoes. I don't wanna see shit like that on a car forum.

Some sites I've visited won't allow noobs to sell stuff until they've posted a fixed amount of posts. Maybe that may be a cruel but good solution?

basically there are SCRIPTS/Programs that people use something along the line ir IRC (mIRC Client) with continuously searching through forums etc to post thing

what i do recon is that the ADMINS should go to the AdminCP and change the sign up settings where u can view the board unless you are a member and then include the Sercurity messages about entering codes wen u sign up because the bots cant get past that unless its put in manually, i have no idea what the admins think of making the board so GUESTS cant see threads.... so you know lets ask them... admins what u think >?

^^^ that's all well old hat stuff though. These days it is actual people who open these accounts up, test the water and then the bots move in on the account and spam like crazy until the account gets deleted. Those captcha word verification things aren't all that useful any more. Moderator approval for people's first couple of threads would sort it but it would need an army of moderators on this site!!

Alternatively you can download databases of known dodgy IP address ranges to simply ban people signing up from. But then that's not all that useful because so many of these come from IP addresses of computers that have got viruses on them allowing the nasty people to use them (called zombies!) and these computers can be anywhere on the internet not just the usual places of china, eastern europe, russia, africa etc... Plus you will no doubt end up blocking some potential legitimate new members.

Making it so that people have to enter a captcha word verification for their first ten posts might put the spammers off a bit. Dunno if the current forum software can do it or not really.

depends if there running the latest IPB or not

If you see a bot, kick him in the nuts!

there was some porn posted this morning at like 3.30

went on when i got up....was bored, and wham there it was, in you face

We're trying our best to tackle the problem. But it has to be done manually. We'll get it sorted eventually.

It doesnt help that I can't remove these posts whilst i'm at work though because of the nature of them. Also if users clicked report rather than reply and posting crap afterwards, it'd really help us out.
