I have been the owner of a polo 16v for just over a week now, and after having a 1.4 cl 8v previously, the fuel economy seems awful. I drive to and from uni each day, about a 40 mile round trip, and i'm using almost a 1/4 of a tank of fuel each day!!

Could someone please tell me if there are any commons problems with the 16v that could cause such poor fuel economy.

I'm not sure if this is related, but sometimes, usually at around 60mph, particuarlly when i'm slowing down changing down gears, there is a sort of vibration that feels like its coming from behind the front seats through the floor. Could this be an exhaust mount, or something more serious.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Fuel ecomomy isnt the best for city driving but aint majorly bad on motorways....i try and keep the tank as full as possible and theat seems to help a touch (or that could be just me imagining )

As for the vibration theres a 'soft spot' on mk4 between 3-4k revs where the heat shield on the exhust shudders...been the same on every mk4 i know so probs is just that

i get 300 miles to a tank

if you want good mpg keep it below 4k rpm

Cheers for the replies. I'll check the heat shield for the vibration. As for mpg i have been keeping it below 4k :( could it be a sensor or something?

i use to get about 400 to a tank i mine

and some of that was a little bit of ragging it aswell

I got quite a lot from my last 16v, i bet it was at least 35-40mpg...i have no idea how you'd get better mpg though sorry!

I got 50MPG on the motorway in my Lupo Sport. Which means that I only used 18.3 litres of petrol to get from London to Crewe. 180 mile trip.

Around the city fuel economy aint all that bad, usually around the 40MPG mark.

Check your lambada sensor or sensors if they have two... VAG com should bring it up for you... checked your tyre pressures... keep it below 3k as welland anticipate the road in front of you so that your not constantly dropping down to first and back up through the gears again.

£20 normally gets me 140miles

could it be the lambda sensor causing such more mpg then? And does anyone know if it is just vagcom that will bring it up, or will garages be able to check it on their own diagnostic reader.

yer if your lambe probs are going youd get poor mpg, youll get a engine mangment light up if it does go

if not give it a lil servies with air fliter and fuel filter which loads of people seam to forget about that one
