Yeh i dont understand how people said this. I went to my bro's work the other day (he's an audi mechanic) and ordered a gasket and new rocker cover bolts. Picked it up today and just need to fit it. :)

i got my dunlop 185/50's off my dads mate who owns a tyre shop. brought them back from germany, puncture repaired practically new. £10 each

Subframe arrived today!! Minor issues to sort out but i'll explain that in a bit.

Over the summer he has taken some time out so spend with his family,

thankfully he had just enough parts and time to make one by hand especially for me :-D

There are some photos of the building of it to come but for now i'll let the pics do the talking!

Right problem being, because this isnt a standard mk3 engine the subframe fouls the bottom of the sump

The AFH sump is approx 170mm deep where as the original mk3 1.3 sump was only 130mm

So you end up with this...

However I believe this can be cured by fitting a mk3 sump to the AFH engine.

Just need to know if the oil pick up needs modifying in any way and whether i can use a mk3 gasket because the AFH doesnt have a sump gasket!

if the mk3 sumps you can use a mk3 gasket, i think they are cork tho, which are poo and will invariably leak. I've hylomard a sump before as it hasnt leaked to date

subframe looks good dude, just another wee minor thing and itll be all bolted up and the car back on 4 wheels again =D

come to think of it, rick (humer) had the same thing happen but with the standard arb, so to drop the arb, he used a piece of box section between the mounts on the body and the mounts for the arb.

Yeh Heg123 used a mk3 sump although i think that was purely because he had a nice new shiny one lying around! (thankyou to pinches for pointing this out)

Is that a positive that the Mk3 Sump wont fit?

haven't tried yet, I'm hoping it does because in heg's thread it deffinitly is a mk3 sump. But I'm just sounding out my options, dry sump or the cheaper alternative of having the AFH sump cut down and re-welded.

Arent you glad I'm finding all these problems, at least now if you buy a subframe you will know what do to make it fit!

if the mk3 sump dont fit then u could just make a cut out into the mk4 sump and reweld it. not to much hassle really.

This is a fantastic project btw and well done so far!

so obviously, it does fit.

Firstly, got new bearings and polybushes in

So now i can get on with re-building the suspension assembly at the weekend

Right, the sump fiasco!

Drained the oil (mostly on the parents patio) and whipped the mk3 sump off to see what was going on

As you can see its quite a shallow pick up and pipe thing (excuse the failure of proper terms)

Next up was the mk4 AFH sump

This is a much deeper oil pick up and pipe thing (obviously needs to be because of the deeper sump

So i then pinched the oil pick up thingy from the mk3 engine

And fitted to the AFH

trouble is the pipe is too long so i struck a line from level with the oil pick up thing and marked 5mm increments

Hack-sawd these off one by one offering up the sump each time to so that i didnt cut off too much

And it fits!

Couple of issues:

Little bit worried about how close the edge of the sump gets to the flywheel

(the mk4 AFH sump has a cut out here)

19 of the 20 bolts that hold the sump on fit perfectly, however for some reason this one doesnt so i'll widen it out a little

So there we go, all fitted (fingers crossed)

and thennn.....
