Aye, bens right. They create a lot of turbulance to the air passing through which causes un-uniform mixture. You need to get the air entering the carbs as linear as possbile, meaning everything nice and smooth etc.

Bare, shallow and big radiused trumpets are the best, even better if enclosed in an airbox.
