Renegade's Cammed Mk3 1.6 16v Hybrid

Featured Replies

no!... :)

I know you said your getting a spark but I would charge the battery to make sure its giving a good spark. As Mine was doing this and it would seem the cold weather killed the battery. The double and triple check the dizzy is in the right position and the leads are going to the right plugs... 1-3-4-2 :)

not too sure bout the air/fuel coming out.. that would only happen if the inlet valves are not closing?!?!? but when it happened with mine it was because there was fuel not getting used due to the excessive turning over and it was just spitting bits out..

I had two batteries connected mark as the one's been stood for a while.

I dont understand it because all I've done is disconnect stuff then connect them back up! I'll re-check the dizzy tomorrow

All of your batterys are fucked though

We had like 3 connected to the breadvan and it still wouldnt go

Mate that doesn't sound good at all, it shouldn't sound 'clunky' even if it has been stood for a while, I guess you've turned it over a good bit so it should of got oil all around the engine. How would you say it turns over, slow, normal or fast? Try turning it over using a spanner or some thing on the bottom pulley to see if it has good compression, you really shouldn't have air blowing out the intake mate, is it a noticeable amount? (well you've noticed it so it must be but you know what I mean).

  • Author

Yeh its a noticeable amount! Not good?

It struggled to turn over with the one battery, with the other (was straight off dads golf so defo good) it turns over fairly easily, seems to get faster when you push the throttle :-S

Turning it by hand its about normal I reckon

Doesn't sound good mate as it should be sucking in through the carbs not blowing out of them. I'd be checking the timing and compression if it was me but then I always fear for the worse so maybe its just me getting ahead of myself

Talking to Ben and he wants you to get a video, he probably wants it for sexual reasons but it may help if you could post one up?

Yeah, might let a bit of a secret out here, but are the verniers set right?

Will get video tomorrow night

not good mate, as said check the lead order, and timing by hand, (on the crank with a spanner, making sure everythings lined up.)

did the prev owner have it in his car running when you went to pick it up, as I'm sure he hadnt removed it when it was up for sale.

def sounds like the lead order to me, give it a check over in the light tomo and report back.

out of interest have you got a comp tester?

I've done 1432 not 1342 before and had said results! thats why the peril missed out on the rolling road day last year!

He took it out the day I went to get it, it was half out when i got there, were just taking the box off. So no, i've never seen it run in person...

Will borrow a comp tester tomorrow and see, trouble is its dark by the time I get back from work

Well I've brought myself some time, the coupe is now off the road

What position should the cams be in at TDC? i.e what valves should be open/closed?

  • Author

Yeh but no good ones(*read* bent valves) Life seems to be falling apart at the moment so I'm going to take some time out from cars, chill, and decide what direction I want to go in

Gutted mate, now will you let us all know what it is as we may be able to help, you 100% sure its bent valves?

that sucks dude :-(

Whaaaat, bent valves? How can you be sure? You took the head off?

Gutting man

:-(

Any idea how they got bent Dan? Replacing the valves is easy but if your buying them new it isn't gonna be cheap, with the hg and head bolts your gonna be looking at around the £200 mark I'd imagine. You could easily use valves from another head tho which would no doubt work out a lot cheaper. Still tho very shit situation

What engine is it? i've got shit loads of different valves lieing about from rebuilds...

He's got enough engines lying around to rebuild it 3 times over lmao.

Firstly true that toby ^^ and I almost have!

SO! A months gone by far too fast.... I should probably update...

Pic taken when i'd just got the engine, got it in turned it over, bent valves, rebuilt, new valves, headgasket wouldnt seal, head back off, new genuine VW gasket, sealed fine! Carbs balanced and set up so it was running (carbs have been up to boggbros before this to be stripped cleaned and rejetted to suit the 1600 engine, although they drilled them to an overfueling 160 jet to be on the safe side)

So its currently a 1.6 hybrid AFH with fast road cams running CBR600 carbs

I'll get some pics of it in and all polished and nice but that one will have to do for the moment!

So today I spent the morning over in Birmingham at Steve Walford Motorsport having the carbs set up on the rollers

Sound guys, very knowledgeable and very reasonable price wise!! :-D The yards amazing, loads of grasstrack cars and random supercharged things!!

Yeh, that'll do it.

Made 156bhp on another run but he forgot to save it! Doh!

The delivery is smooth and there's so much more torque than the 1400! Other than a shit battery (which constantly needed jumping) And the throttle cable sticking (Needs a decent cable and adjust the cable mounting on the pedal) There seems to be a strange electrical problem which makes the rev counter jump every-now and again which I need to look into)

All in all rather a good day!

This is now my daily driver which should be interesting...

Anywho more to come (maybe a video, defo pics) and some crazy fibreglass monstrosities so watch this space :-D

is that the secret engine weve bin waiting for? i was expecting something crazy! still awesome though and good power! bet it goes like stink!

sounds meaty! mk3 is looking the dogs too. loving the tinted lights!
