I have no finger prints on two of my fingers after sanding that rocker cover, so as long as I only use those two fingers I can commit crimes and get off scott free!

what could you do which is illegal and only requires two fingers. . . . . . . . . .

Bit of an update

Thought the engine looked a bit sorry for itself so gave it a lick of paint whilst dodging rain showers and trying to shake the hangover

Then got a bit carried away...

Got the starter motor bolted up

Then got the engine mount into shape

Then hit a bit of a snag, the bottom adjustable bracket on the alternator didnt line up. This was odd as it should have worked exactly how it did on the mk3 engine block

So, had a cuppa and attacked it with a trusty hack-saw

Problem solved!

so this is how it stands tonight, might actually get round to dropping it in soon!

good work mate, I hope that extra wide alternator belt fits though as space is pretty tight on that side in a mk3, it looks even wider than a g40 toothed belt pulley which only just fits! Might just need to grind a cut out into the arb mount bracket.

Looking good, only just read through this. The starter motor can be a nightmare. I think you might have some problems with the alt belt hitting the chassis leg...

I used a mk3 alternater pulley on the crank and a normal mk3 pulley on the alternater and it seemed tight at that but you might be okay.

Yeh, its gona be tight but I'm confident it will fit with mm to spare.

Another reason I think why MikeyMK chose to shift the engine over 5mm but i wouldnt have a clue how to do that!

where did you source your starter and did you have to remove the mk3 engine then attempt to fit the mk4 16v to work out the bracket sizes? i dont really want to remove my mk3 engine until i know its ready to go in as it is my daily car.

do you have any measurements/sizes that you used to make the bracket from?

editted for another question! please can you get the starter motor part number so when i go round scrappers i have a better idea what i need. cheers again!

Ahh yes. paul aka polo13 did this conversion too (i bought his mk3 4 branch off him after he slotted the afh in) are you gonna run this on injection or carbs? Would be good to see an injected afh in a mk3 :)

Luckily a friend had one lying around, its the starter from a late mk3.

If you look back in this thread somewhere there is a dimensioned up drawing of the engine mount bracket, though i had to take about 3-5mm off the bottom of that.

I dont know how quick you work but I wouldnt have thought this conversion was something you could do and still use the car as a daily, unless you were to spend 6 months collecting every single part you will need and take a week off work to fit it all?!

As good as it would be to have an injected one, ( I have Pauls un-coded ECU tucked away in my room just incase) Wiring it up is too much of a job for me, I've decided to go carbs because theres less wiring basically (that and the noise of carbs)

i wanted to get rthe engine ready to drop into the mk3 then get it wired over the weekend. i teach in a coillege so i have just started my 5 weeks holidays. currently doing an ABF into a mk1 on twin 40's.

i have carbs/manifold/r1 fuel pump and 16v engine, so i reckon all i now need is starter, mk2 polo coupe S dizzy/coil and wiring. and bracket!

a page or so back you have put around 10 pictures in the same post and these wont open for me which is confusing as all the rest did>?? i assume the diagram for the bracket is in with them.

if you can offer your experience of anything i may have missed i would be greatful.

is it possible to use the mk4 downpipe and link to the mk3 exhaust as a temp measure tilli get a four branch?

lol, unfortunatly nothing really apart from cleaning the bay and inside wheel arches and continuing polishing of the cam cover thingy.

I'm building this on the drive so all this rain has kinda halted play! Updates over the weekend maybe

i know what you mean about the rain, it hasnt stopped here for three days and I'm also a drive only diy'er! no garages here! so we are the hard core kinda modder then!
