Featured Replies

Quick Question

Do the bolts for the mk1-3 engine mount and mk4 engine mount fit in the same place on the block

and do they bolt in the same way on the chassis legs.

anyone got a picture of a mk4 engine bay without an engine in. I'm not familiar with them so i dont know :-(

mk3 engine bay/engine mount with a mk4 engine, so the bolt marks line up with the alternator bolt pattern.

Think you will find that in the pic of the mk3 with the mk4 engine the mount is fabricated

if the 16v are the same as the 8v 1600 then only two of the three holes are there the third needs to be welded on the block or new mount fabricated

You can use std gearbox mtg front and rear but the alternator brkt mtg needs a little mod as shown below.

You need to drill a couple of extra holes at the bottom where the power steering pump was mounted to stop the rotational forces on the two top mounting bolts.

the mk4 engine you've shown is a diesel which makes it big blocked!

essentially you need a plate like Project_2006 has, i machined 5mm or so off the back off his engine mount to allow for the clearence of the plate

Thanks for the replies guys.

Its actually a Lupo 1.6 16v Engine that I'm fitting in a mk1 polo, the gearbox mounts front and rear have already been modified

and there is this contraption on the engine at the moment, the alternator has been sold.

I'm not sure what the large thing sticking out the top is, I'm assuming i could cut that off, and use the 3F engine mount, with part of the back machined down as pinches said to take account of the thickness of the plate

In the following picture far top right is the std lupo gbox mount unused, far top left is a clutch slave clylinder thing and far bottom left is the std polo gbox mount again unused. the other five brackets are random as fook as i dont know if they are used at all.

I Know Matthew who put an AFH in mk1 used a 3F engine mount which bolted to the mk4 block and used the mk4 alternator pulley on an mk3 alternator.

said car, mk1 polo afh lump, 3f engine mount with 3f alternator and afh alternator pulley, belt came from motorfactors, after speaking with matt he did make a plate.

What i am curious to now then is how i go about tensioning the alternator? Do i need a bracket that bolts to the side of the block?

Looks like the bit that sticks up in the air is "designed" to accept the adjustment bar from under the std alternator mounting, but that will neccesitate an alternator with an adjustment lug on the top. ......... clear as mud !!!

and the plot thickens

cheers matey! Will get the engine in thursday/friday and come to the alternator bridge when i cross it!

missions indeedy =D

edit: has anyone got a good pic of the alternator tensioning bracket on an early polo engine, preferably where it mounts to the head?

I am only really familiar with the mk1 golf ones which differ from zee polos
