I'm on the hunt for new tyres but 185/50/14 are a bit expensive so was wondering if 185/55/14 would work on a mk3 polo lowered 60mm? has any one had experience with this combo? do the tyres rub on the arches?

Without a shadow of a doubt. They are big tyres, you'd need something like 175/50 or 195/45, and even then you may still have minor rubbing...
