I'm looking at some wellers but I've got a 1043cc with a four speed box so cruising wont be much fun. Wondering if anyone had any experience, advice on tyre sizes or if I should just avoid it altogether?

you wont go very fast and on a motorway you'll have poor economy. i have 175/50/13 on my ats' and its not brill with a 5 speed, first gear is almost pointless. round town it will be great but apart from that.....

I had 175/50/13 A539s on my 1.0L and there wasn't any problems with it. 165/55 Nankangs seemed to offer more comfort though, but less grip.

So advice is bump up to 14s or 15s if I want to get anywhere far away? or get my hands on a 5speed box if possible?

Flipside is, bigger wheels = less acceleration.

13's are hella fun tbh.

I can't see what's wrong with having 13" wheels on a 1 litre 4 speeder?

Just don't fit silly low profiles with a tiny rolling radius thus reducing the gearing and you'll be reet.

What's wrong with 165/65's or 175/60's?

Thing is, reducing the rolling radius might ever so slightly improve acceleration, handling almost certainly..

Bigger wheels wont improve top speed on motorways.. in a 1.0 anyway..

i wont to put a 195/45/ tyre on a 13 or is that a bad idear lol.

Can you even get 195/45-13??

yes, continental make them at about 65quid a corner, with an 6-8j rim there wont be a problem.

I'm running 165 /59 15's on a 7J with a 1.0l 5 speed and dont get to bad economy and can still get to a ton on the motorway (sat nav speed)..

As others have said it makes the car nippier around town ..

Stevie - Aren't your tyres 165/55/13's?

find a 5 speed box with the code "8P" or "8N"

highest ratio 5th......not too far short of a G40 box

mk3 1L 4speed gearbox is a awsome car!

dunno what tyre size i've got but my top speed on the sat nav was 88mph. On a private runway if it makes any difference.

Hell yeah!

My mk2 1 litre 4 speed would happily sit at 70mph on the motorway, absolutely no problem at all. If the road was flat (or at least without too many long uphill gradients) it'd hold 80mph plus.

With my foot to the floor, I got an indicated 95mph a couple of times and TBH, it was stable enough and felt fine. I was really surprised at just how easily it got there too. Understably though, it was getting a bit noisy at these speeds.

and what size wellers would fit? the 7'' with 175 tyre or could I go for 8'' and go up to a 185?

Depends on the offset, if its not something silly like -7, then 7j front, 8j rear, with 175/50 all round

thanks yeah I'm thinkin 175/50 on front and 175/70 on rear just for something different ill just drop the rear a little more.

Yeah but then you'll end up with very short gearing? 175/50's will make the car rev a lot harder at motorway speeds, it'll be noisier and obviously economy will suffer. It'll accelerate quicker though!

I was quoting my mk2 1 litre breadvan which was completely standard at the time with 155/70 tyres.

I can understand you may want to fit something a bit "fancier" than a 155/70, how about 165/65's? Standard fitment on the GT Coupes and a perfect fit on 5 1/2" rims. A bit lower profile (better looking ) are 165/60's, think they might be harder to get though?

IMO, 175/60's as fitted to the G40 are pretty much perfect for a mk2/3 Polo unless you have lots of G/Turbo grunt.

TBH, I can't see why people choose tyres because of the way they look? Surely their performance and whether they match the characteristics of the car are of utmost importance??

i have 165/65/13's on my GT on 5'5J wheels. in my opinion it is a sensible size; it's stock size so it won't affect your speedo or gearing :)
