GTI compression stuff

Featured Replies

hey fellas,

its your rindooshbag here, asking another question:

anyone ever had their head skimmed before?

i think that when i get paid tomorrow, ill have some money! which is nice!

id love to get a bit more power from my ARC-GTI motor, and thought about bringing it to a machine shop, and skimming the head for higher compression.

question is.. how high can i go (ratio wise) before i should start worrying about reliability?

what is the stock compression rate anyway?

any help?

for people who have had this done to their car, was there a difference? any issues? changes?

I'm curious:)

Wow wow, watch out with just going of and skimming your head mate!

By skimming it, well yes you increase your engine compression ratio in the top-dead-centre = higher combustion = more power, BUT!

If you skim your head say 1mm, the distance between you cam-pulley and crankpulley deacreases, making the position of the cams in comparison to the crank alter just a couple of degrees, resulting in "non-optimal" timing of your cams&ignition. So in order for skimming to give optimal results, get yourself adjustable cam-pulley(s) in roder to keep the cam- & ignition-timing in optimal order, for optimal performance!

Also how high an compression in TDC (top-dead-centre) depends on many factors, one of the most important ones is fuel. Fuel may look/smell/costs almost alike, there's a lot of difference in quality though. The cheap stuff from the self-service Tango or TinQ is crap! It will pre-detonate before TDC at high revs when on a too high an compression. But for instance the better quality BP Ultimate will start to pre-detonate at higher compressions due to the higher octane-level and "cleanness'/"purity" and therefor quality of the fuel

But if you wish to tune your ARC, let me know, I know just the perfect address for it, ever heard of that mk4 1,8 20v bi-turbo on throttle-bodies pushing slighty over 500BHP here in Holland? 8-)

Easier and cheaper ways to get more power. As i've suggested before de-cat and remap you'll be entertained for a few months.
