wheel width

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just spoken to image wheels about exttending my inner bowl of my shcmidt th line 15 x 8. I am a little confused so if anyone could help me it would be greatly appreciated. Basically i have a 2.5" lip on the wheel and a 5.5" inner bowl to totla the 8" wheel. I am changing the wheels just to make them wider not to make them stick out more so i will bge changing the ineer bowl to make the wheel either an 8.5 or 9 inch wheel.

They said if i changed the inner bowl this would not affect where the wheel would stick out just the fact that it will make it wider going towards the centre of the car.

This bit if correct is fine, but then he went onto baffle me saying that effectively my wheel lip to lip or something is actually a 7" wheel what does he mean by this how wide is my wheel????

Thanks

Jonny Blease

Jonny they measure the point where the tyre seats as the width of the wheel so if you were to measure mine image would say they are 9inch total diameter, even though they are a 15x8j

you have same plans as i have ;)

Is he on about the odd offset this will create? becuase you have the same size outer lip as a typical 7 inch wheel might have, but you have the same inner lip as maybe a 10 or 12 inch whell might have.

Thats all i can think of anyway. Its not a problem I dont think, just a bit odd.

well not quite as the th line generally comes with a 2.5" lip on an 8j but maybe

really you going for 9s, cool i just wanted to make them wider without making them stick out more so i though this is the best option

he must have said 9" then not 7" my bad

All depends on your offset's Jonny, mine are 8j but only have a 2" rim! Mine are ET 25

Shouldn't be a problem as long as they don't foul anything on the inner side of the arch. Like suspension struts and stuff.

thats what i was thinking, il have to check that out, but it should be ok i hope, because the et is low so they will be still sat quite far out,

thanks

you are et12 on the rear if i remember correctly!

making the backs larger jonny to 9j will make them et25 and you will have 26mm LESS inner clearance to the suspension components ;)

so 26mm closer that should be ok then??

and they will stick out the same amount all these offsets and stuff confuse me?

The fronts should be the same cause your using the same mounting face and the same outer lip. Its only the inner part you are adjusting. I'd see how much clearance there is behind the wheel before you go buying larger barrels. Cause if they don't fit you'll either need to revert to original barrels, new smaller barrels or spacers!

yeah dont just go getting them without measuring, i need to do this on mine, measure the current gap now and work out as 8j and see if the inner clearance can deal with being 26mm smaller. and as kam said no more poke will be achieved

ok thanks people i will have to get measuring now, what et are on your image wheels christian??

et15 on the back et22 on the front

Out of curiosity, why do you want to make them wider anyway? Like round the back. I can understand wanting deeper outer lips, but I'm not sure why you'd want to make them wider on the inside.

for me its look, when i look at my car from certain angles the wheels look real odd and just look like i have whacked on some huge spacers! just doesnt sit right, and i think its down to overall ratio between how far they poke out and the width of them.

i think it will balance up the batty of my car if the wheels sit more towards the center of my car if you get me

Ahh, I get what you mean.

yeah, haha i ran my wheels before it had been lowered for about 3 weeks and it looked really odd from behind with the wheels sitting far away from the car  when you lower it it sort of hides it but it still can look odd at certain angles.

Wider the better!!!

POKE (FTW) me baby!!! :D

same for me, they looked so much wider when i had 195s, so now i need 195s on a 9j

I might whack my 9's on the front and get a pair of 10's for the back mid-year, just for the crack like ;)

If the current ET is 12 when 8" wide and your adding an inch on the inside won't the new ET be 37?

no mike as you its all to do with the mounting face and where it sitrs central to the wheel!

i did it this way....

8j et 12

9j et 12

you need to calculate the difference between the 2 of these....

you add 13mm either side of the wheel to keep the same offset but make them one inch wider, however we dont wont any further poke in this instance so we add the 13mm from the outer onto the rear and double tit up so 26mm on the back of the wheel.

WheelOffset.jpg

because you are measuring from the centre point of the wheel, i am certain you are only adding 13mm onto what is already a 12mm offset thus making it 25

my head now hurts!
