Ok i want to learn to ride a bike next spring. I'm just really confused as to how many different tests there are and what bikes i can ride after i have passed each test??!! If i can ride a 125cc scrambler (with some modifications) then that will probably suffice.

u could ride a 125 with L plates aslong as its under 33bhp with just a CBT

just dont get caught without L plates as i now have a LC20 for not having any on my rs125 :/ which rapes me on insurance.

If you want a dirt bike get an old DT125r in good nick and fir the kit from the european bikes, YPVS, CDi with no rev limiter. This will get it to almost 30bhp.

I did that plus a little bit more. Bear in mind that 33bhp on a dt125r is over 400bhp per ton. (not incl rider)

thats what i was told as well, but i never did a cbt so couldn't say for sure. unless its been changed with all these new bullshit changes they have made recently?

I've got me licence, ano a lad at work rides a cbr125 at work but a dunno how much bhp it has,

but I'm postive its restricted so he can ride it on a cbt!!

Assuming you took your car test after 2000 and haven't done anything towards a bike license:

Currently, you can't ride anything legally.

If you do a CBT, you can ride a restrictted 50cc. You can restrict a bigger bike down to the same power, but TBH, it's pointless.

If you do a standard bike test, this lets you go to 33bhp, which is basically a 125cc, or bigger bike if restrictted.

After 3 years, you gain full bike entitlement, and can ride WTF you want :)

However, if you're already over 21 when you take your bike test, you can do direct access, which lets you go straight to anything.

2 years not 3 matey. but other wise correct. i just done my test and i can only ride upto 33bhp atm.

you should be able to ride up to 125cc on your cbt i think. the 125cc cant have more than 33bhp but tbh there arent really any 125s that have much over 15 bhp lol.

i dunno, in N.I we dont have to do a CBT and we can ride up to 125cc on our provisional or car licence.

do your full bike test, be restricted to 33bhp for two years, then ride what u want.

no point bothering with the lesser bike tests, just get the full one. its easy and if you do the smaller one youll only wish youd done the full one.

or if you are over 21 i advise you go for direct access which gets you the same full licence but with no restriction period.

CBT and when get a derestricted RS125 or similar, they're fast enough with a few upgrades, my mates was an ex-race engine good for a tonne.

Or get a 125cc 2 stroke scooter, ie Gilera Runner, a Malossi 172cc kit, with carb and exhaust will see 28bhp, on a scooter. I'm awaiting the usual 'hairdryer' bollocks.. but trust me, 28bhp at the wheel of a scooter is bloody fun!

they have really messed about with the bike license laws over the last few years, basically you get 2 years on up to a 125 if you do the CBT then you have to take the other test, or apply for provisional and do the CBT again. If you take the full test on say a 500cc you can ride anything you like, but i think if you pass your full test on a 125 as said you are restricted on power for either a certain amount of time or you have to take another test, I'm not sure how it works now.

sorry but 0.125cc = very quick bike especially as rs125's kick out 33bhp as standard, 0-60 in around 6 .5 seconds and thats before you start tweaking them to squeeze a few more bhp out

anyway the best thing about bikes like the rs125 isnt the stats but its the power delivery nothing much happens until 8krpm :) then they let rip haha

Thankyou for the clear explanation, the whole bike license thing is so confusing!!!! I might wait until I'm 21 to learn then if i can go straight to anything. I jus love the idea of havin a bike for the summer months :)

nope that wouldnt be below 33bhp its probably nearer to 40+bhp plus the engine would not last long at all (its a competition motocross bike )

sorry but that wouldnt technically be legal on a cbt as I'm pretty damn sure its more than 15bhp if it had the full dep system and rejetting done. having said that most people on cbt's ride round with more than 15bhp even though they shouldnt.

it has the powervalve but not the solinoid that opens and closes it, if its fitted it makes a buzzing noise when the ignition is switched on as the solinoid moves the valve. you can open it fully manually and its quick but a bit too peaky. had 2 dtr's and a tzr and rd's many moons ago. but now on a ducati and lovin it.
