Checked for any codes and couldn't see anything that looked like 085 in the numbers that i was looking at, i did have the full code but left it in my overalls, anywho i was looking at it and couldn't see any reason it wouldn't fit, well we shall see when i try :?

took some pics of it

Quick one, will my exhaust manifold fit the abd head, this will be temporairy.

It looks identical to my 085, check on the bottom.

yes, manifold will fit. if its an 085 you'll just need to swap the mounts, or find a 5speed mount

Aha, gave it a good clean today , and found 085 in one of the codes! (085.301.103) so good stuff.

On their way are the manifold , carb and air filter , just need the arb and fuel pump !

Cheers lads!

That's definately a 5-speed. If you're using the ABD head, you'll still need to get the late mk2 setup together with the late mk2 distributor, as the fitment on the early heads is different to the later head.

How about if i run it of the Seat ignition? You mentioned i could use my head (gl), are there any benefits to this or negatives, are valve sizes smaller or owt like that ?

Got the GK manifold today too !

Gl will have smaller valves than the ABD head, the ignition off of the ibiza uses an ECU which is bad news. MH stuff fits the ABD head and you'll only have to change a few bits.

hmm, you don't happen to know anyone selling the mh bits needed , can't find them anywhere! Nothing at the local scrappy, nobody breaking one at the mo .

Think I've screwed up and got the wrong carb, its a dmtl but came of a nova and just read that i should have been looking for a dmtl for a p o l o ! Can i still use it?

yes, get a picture up to confirm, things like the throttle linkage+quadrant maybe be different but effectively its the same carb. you'll need an adapter plate aswell as it wont bolt straight to the manifold. the dmtl/dmtr thread will hold info on fitting it all together. as for the MH parts you are just going to have to keep your ears and eyes open, later mk2 golfs also had this motor.

Pics of carb, and manifold. Looked at afew pics and the carb looks very similar to all other dmtls for the polo , only thing i noticed is the throttle bit is abit different , not a big deal

I would get rid of that plastic swirl pot and get a metal one off a mk2 golf as the plastic ones can crack which can cause an engine fire. Otherwise a DMTL off a nova should be ok, but you need to check the jet sizes (four brass screws in the top are the jets, unscrew them and pull them out, but remember which order they went in - they will have numbers stamped on them relating to their size) You'll need an adaptor to get the carb to fit the GK inlet, you can get these from weber, but it's possible to make your own.

GL head has slightly smaller inlet valves than the later heads. Someone on here posted about saving stuff from a late 1043 - Alot of the stuff you could use if he's willing to sell it (head, dizzy)

Nope he isn't selling any bits of it, i feel rude asking people to break up there cars :-) think I've asked everyone thats selling a mk2 , not checked the jets yet either  . Just looking at the alternator side today , wondering which one i ought to use, the bottom pulley will need to be swapped if i use my mk2 one does it fit?, if i use the one of the abd , will this bolt onto the mk2 mount( are the mounts identical) , also the water pipes housing thing on the right hand side of the block(under the dizzy), does the mk2 one fit to the abd?

polo alternator, you also need to swap the bottom pulley as the ABD uses a ribbed belt not a V belt. not the whole lot as the GL has a different cam tooth profile, just the part the drives the alternator, 4 bolts, these are usually corroded to hell. all the ancillaries off of the GL just the ABD block, head and box. thermostat housing is the same i do believe, i couldnt see any difference between the one i took off of an MH and the ABD one.

the right hand side are the primary jets, the eft hand side are the secondary. outsides are idle jets, insides are made up of 3parts. air correctors at the top, emulsion tubes in the middle and mains down the bottom, these are jets for my engine. when my ABD goes in over christmas i'll update you on the jet sizes i'm using, unless you beat me to it.

Primary

idle: 45

Main: 115

emulsion: F22

Air: 170

Secondary

Idle: 70

main 115

emulsion: F30

Air 185

Awsome replies lads, il get the jets out tonight . I guess the race is on then mate ;)

You might find the jets on the nova carb are totally different. have a look behind the throttle linkage for the venturi sizes. If the numbers are 22 and 22 then they should be pretty similar to the polo ones listed above.

forgot about that, mines a 32/34 dmtl with 24/25 venturis.

24/25 venturis on mine

my jets are :

Primary

idle: 55

Main: 117

emulsion: F30

Air: 165

Secondary

Idle: 60

main 125

emulsion:F25

Air:165

slightly richer setup than mine, good starting point for a 1.4, but spend the money getting it setup on a rollling road as soon as its built and run in.

had any luck with finding an adaptor plate yet for between the carb and the mani?

  • Author

yeah i will do , not found an adapter plate yet , I'm going to see if i can make one this weekend , how much are they new? Do i ring weber and tell them what i need ?

Do you reckon i should get slightly smaller jets or something ?

drive it to the rolling road on what you have, shouldnt be far off looking at the figures. a RR tune is a must once you've fitted carbs, theres not really any other way to assess the fuelling accurately with the engine under load. adapter plates arent rocket science to make, its just a case of whether you have access to the tools/materials.

i look forward to the next months posts. A, for your engine going in and B, for mine :)

Gearbox mount question, i mentioned they are both different , mounted in different places and a total different mount. Is it a 5-speed gearbox mount that i need of a mk2/3? Will this go straight in without modification?

  • Author

Also got an adapter plate on the way , but I'm unsure that it will fit, they said it is for a dmtr to fit a vw inlet but couldn't confirm which inlet, i take it they are all the same golfs, polos etc? part number was 9990113900 from webcon.

Might have the ignition bits soon too!

dmtl and dmtr are the same pattern, and as far as i know the twinchoke polo/golf manifolds use the same manifold stud pattern.

as for the gearbox Q, you should be able to strip the crap off the ibiza box and fit the original mount from the 4speeder on.

question is, are you going to be done before me?
