So i'm looking at getting the HID kit.. prob hids4u or something like that... BUT... I have standard lights in the MK5.

I have been told by the people trying to sell me the kit that its ok, and i don't need to update my lights.

Whats the verdict? Do I need the GTi lights so that I can have a prism. What is the problem with using a normal light.

Unless the lamps are designed for HIDs, it's illegal and you can be made to take them off to pass an MOT.

TBH that's unlikely, but is it worth the risk?

Besides, if you're not projecting a beam properly you're probably dazzling other road users.

your only supposed to have xenons with the glass eye type lense thing, if you have xenons on a normal lense as said your light will scatter all over the place....

as for MOT, it takes probably 5 minutes to take them out and put your original ones back in so thats not a problem!

and xenons are well worth the money!

p.s. I'm calling them xenons as thats what they are classed as due to the gas inside, but obviously you all know i mean H.I.D's

For ages I've been running them through clear after market headlights, which do not have projectors, and I've never been flashed by anyone or attracted any police attention.

I know of an Audi A2 (standard clear headlights, no projectors) going in for an MOT with them, the tester phoned VOSA to confirm if it was a fail and they said as long as the beam pattern is unaffected, they're fine.. so it passed.

Personally if I had a 6N2 I'd get some GTi headlights although they're not cheap..

I should add, I wouldn't use HID's on standard frosted glass headlights (6N and older), cos then the beam pattern really would be shit.

Try LittleMan for HIDS, they seem to be cheap and have digital ballasts so wont affect bulb warning system on newer cars (or so I've been told)

whats the difference with gti lights, i knew they had the bottom fogs, but didnt think the headlights were different from mine; brighter? different colour?

GTi's had projector headlights with Xenons

Look quite different to the normal ones..

my mate just passed his mot with hids in his standard lights, they were 8000k iirc he got an advisory though

Yes GTI's had different lights, and HID's so I will get some GTI lights just to be safe!!!

MOTs vary depending on how much of a jobsworth the MOT tester is, but they should fail.

And regardless of whether you get spotted, you're dazzling other motorists.

By adding HID's to lights that arent designed for em, they will certainly be illegal;

they dont have heated headlight washers jets, the beam pattern will be incorrect and light will scatter.

you can sort the beam and scatter out by getting the GTi lights with the eyeball glass thing, however they will still be illegal due to not having heated washer jets. this can also be sorted but is quite a job to cut holes in bumper route jets to it, change the washer bottle to one with element, then creating an elecrical line etc etc etc

I've got HID's on mine, I'm aware of the scatter but people have been infront of me and said mine arent that bad due to me having crystal clear headlights

i passed with HID's and LHD headlights which i aligned myself

also, projectors ARENT needed... my mums merc has non-clear headlights and that has HID's as standard..........

If you're that worried, hids4u.co.uk offer an "anti glare" version of the bulbs for an extra £10, designed for use without projectors. I wouldn't go higher(bluer) than a 6000K kit, or you're asking for unwanted attention!

As Foxie said, a lot of cars have Xenons without projectors. Mercs, Citroens etc.

this is the reason why its such a gray area!!

and i agree dont go higher than 6000k. i wish i'd bought 4300k which is more manufactre fitted, but some manufacturers have cars with 8000k and even 10000k!!!
