had a busy day in college today , was ment to be sanding down a metal sheet we had 2 make but i decided i didnt want to do that and asked if i could bring my car in the workshop and crack on so i took the front end apart and flatted the 8v front bumper when i got a idea of attempting smoothing the number plate recess so starting cracking on with that and tbh for a first attempt its going well i think i rememberd to smooth the toe eye this time as i forgot on the 16v , made a plastic backin plate and fibreglassed over the top of it to build it up , now i need to filler the rest and block sand it to get the shape and lines of the bumper perfect ( fingers crossed ) , i also prep'd my grille surround so once the filler is on and shaped i will be putting the whole lot in the booth and giving it a once over then its time to start work on the bonnet and the front is back to how it should be

also going to attempt to smooth the badge and handle on my boot and also shorten the recess ... when you can do it for free who's gunna argu lol

looking good mate...its great that your smoothin a 8v bumper....it will look brilliant. I saw a picture of a dragon green 8v with a smoothed front bumper....it look mint!! Good work!!!

What can you actually smooth on 8v bumpers, might give mine a try

just the number plate recess and the tow eye cacth really dude

cant see that lasting long before it cracks, or have you put some screws through for the fibre-glass to grab to?

i guess you could smooth the long lower grill....i wonder wether it would look good?! anyone good at photshop....?

Suppose it will still look better, I've gota sand down my front bumper anyway due to a few scratchs so may as well do that too, i had a 16v too but didnt look right with the rear bumper and everyone seems to have them, plus I've got a slanted drive and it always caught the bumper.

Suppose there isnt anything that can be done to the back.

What did you actually make to fill the gap on the bumper.

well basically i got a old PP plastic bumper from college and cut it the size of a number plate and used that as a backing plate , screwed that onto the bumper with some resin behind it , then added another little strip on the highest point of the recess and screwed that then added alot resin then added the fibreglass matting and then alot of resin on top of that , then done this again , then once it dryed i put 3 srews intot the finbreglass onto the plastic so they was flushed to stop any flexing of the bumper to form a crack , then I'm going to build up a few layers of body filler to get the right shape and strengh ... hopefully lol

k, might wait for the summer to come before i start messing with my car, am unsure yet though

Good progress i think 8v's really suit polos. I did have a thread on here a while ago called polo's reppin 8v bumpers but its not on here now?! Some 1 photoshopped options regarding smoothing parts of the lower grille.

if you had ever been on an engineering course you will of seen much worse! iirc that was done by a guy getting his ring caught in the guttering in a window channel on a wagon then jumping down, it was his ring that pulls his skin back

if you see some of the accidents whilst using a laithe you would think more than twice about doing the right thing!

make sure when you come to doing the filler you use a flexible filler like isopon bumper repair filler, costs a bit more but is well worth the extra outlay! I used it on a bumper I modified and it never cracked, not even after some heavy speedbump knocks
