should be easy enough i would rather be doing that tomorrow than fitting my range rover gearbox lol..........goodluck

Not hard, bit arduous but not bad.

Asssuming a lack of special tools:

Crack off wheel nuts

Crack off driveshaft nut

Jack corner, apply axle stand

Remove wheel

Remove hubnut (30mm?)

Remove M8 spline bolts holding driveshaft into diff (I get an assistant to stand on the brakes while I undo them).

Remove driveshaft, place in vice

Remove CV boot clips

Pull back CV boot

Remove CV end (swift tap with a copper mallet)

Replace CV boot

Replace CV end (repacking grease if neccessary), tap on with mallet (use a block of wood to protect the end of the shaft).

Stick it all back together.

they aint m8 spline bolts arghhh help what bit do i need to undo the bolts holding it on?

they are (or certainly should be) 8mm spline bolts that hold the inner joint to the gearbox.

It is possible to do this without actually removing the shaft from the car.

how can i replace the black out cover with out removing the shaft from the car?

No idea then, I used the same 8mm 12pin internal spline that I always do to take off a driveshaft last night and it worked fine.

Are you sure it's not rounded off, or full of goop that's stopping your spline bit biting?

bloody hell i started at 10 am and just finished, from the last mech to work on the car had put diffrent head bolts on the driveshaft to gear box end,gsf sending me wrong parts and 3 shops not selling splined bits so i have managed to source beg and borrow and now all done.

can i just say a big thank you once again to you lot for all the help and advice.

Next question where can i get some new bolts?

either VW or a scrapyard.

how to replace the cv boot without removing the shaft? Just remove the outer end of the shaft from the hub and let it rest on the floor, then push back the old boot and knock off the cv joint. Just personal preference really, whether you find it easier to just remove the whole thing and then work on it in a vice or work on it with your head tucked into the wheel arch.

well i done it now but like your description, but one thing is how can i get the end of the shaft from the hub in situ? there was just anough room yesterday to unbolt from engine and slide it out of hub and then onto floor. i was thinking it would of been easier to unbolt the bottom ball join on the 2 arms the anit rool bar and bottom suspension bar. is this right???

yeah you'd have to separate the ball joint from the hub. Only one nut and bolt though.

Hey i thought that and undid and removed the nut and bolt, but nothing happened i couldnt move the two connecting bars from the hub, how would i have done this for next time?

get a long bar and pry them away from the hub, you're fighting against the anti-roll-bar and they are a tight fit so if it's not been separated for years it can take it fair bit of prying.

Cheers for all your help mate at least i know for next time, the rubber around the front two mount points are perished on the roll bar so I'm gonna change them if this has any effect on things???
