If your car ran completely out of petrol, then you might have to crank it a whole lot to get petrol flowing 100% back into the system.

Keep cranking, in the video below, there was fuel in the pipes up to the bulkhead, but no further. If your car is starting but is not running correctly, that is a sign of fuel starvation. The 'emptying' of the pipes can be one of the causes. The fuel pump on a normal mk2 engine is pretty weak and only operates when the engine turns.

Link

If it don't go, then the second cause might be fuel quality. It's a bad thing to run out of petrol on a carburated engine because, unless you have an inline filter, the crap will work it's way into the carb and cause jets to block, which can also produce the problems you describe. To be sure, inspect all the jets and also blast some carb cleaner down their seats in the carb body itself.

Try starting the car with the choke fully out, I think that if you ran out of petrol while it was warm, you may not have thought to use the choke. If for any reason you experience fuel starvation (weak throttle and hesitation) then the choke's a lifesaver.

cheers a have a play about tonight

also

what was you are fule consumtion like when you ran this setup ?

it seems to be guzzzeling fule at the mo :(

  • Author

Fuel consumption would be about 70 miles to 10 quid when fuel was over £1, but the route I took to work was quite throttle heavy and I loved to blast it here and there too.

Bad fuel consumption? Check the idle mixture screw again, it may be wound too far out, compensating for another problem maybe linked to your high idle / cutting out.

i am hopefully getting some twin 40 webers in the next week or so and will be running these on my mk2 golf 1300 (MH?) was just wondering as to what jets, tubes, venturi's, chokes etc. people have used and found the best..

thanks in advance.

It depends what you mean by "the best". For touring or hillclimb, rallying or even fuel-economy (?).

There's a nice little computer program written by Dave Andrews in 1997 for DOS (still works on XP and Vista but the mouse pointer is funny!) to help choose "the best" for twin Weber DCOE or Dellorto DHLA. You input engine capacity and revs for max power and whether for Power or Flexibility.

For example I entered 1272, 5500 and F to get this.

>jettng:  Jetting for DCOE Weber & DHLA Dellorto Carbs
                                                            (C)Dave Andrews 1997
Engine size in Cubic Centimetres [1272]
RPM at which peak power is made  [5500]   Please be realistic for best results
Tune for best (P)ower or (F)lexibility [F]

Weber Carb Settings           Dellorto Carb Settings
Ideal carb size     40 DCOE                       40 DHLA
Choke size          24                            24
Main jets           100                           100
Emulsion tubes      F11/F11/F15                   7772.8/7772.8/7772.7
Air correctors      150                           150
Idle jets           40f9 (Weak F8/F11/F2 Rich F6) 40/7850.2 (Weak .6/.1 Rich .8)
Pump Jets           30/35                         30/35
Aux Venturis        4.0                           7848.3

I reckon choices among / separated items are weak/normal/rich. How you choose those depends on your engine, driving style, care for the environment I suppose.

If instead I choose Power I get bigger chokes and main jet. No real surprise there.

I'm still running a single DMTR myself.

cool program

some bits are a bit vague, 7772.8 are emission emulsion tubes and 7848.3 are emission auxiliary venturis. the car would respond better with 7848.1 venturis as they are activated on a lower block pulse

interesting combination with the idle jet and holder

saying that though there's no harm in trying!

where did you get hold of a program like that?

has anyone put carbs on a 6n polo? can anyone point in the right direction??

Yes, the program does not say which Dellorto DHLA 40 type it's aimed at. I assume it is for the universal performance 40 or 40E.

Usual trick with the later emission (40FGH etc ) carbs is to go for big idle jets (58+ ?) or mess with sleeve inserts to reduce the diameter of the fixed air bleeds. I read somewhere that 7772.8 and .10 and .11 are very holey so the venturi signal needs to be diminished hence the .3 vent. A .1 vent would be very responsive indeed - probably on main jets from very low revs - if you like wheelspn go for it.

I was wondering what 7848.4 vents from Lotus Esprit turbo would be like ?

where did you get hold of a program like that?

I followed a link from another website written by some guys trying to fix a stumble on a kit car by paying a rolling road expert for 3 hors work - turns out they had too massive chokes. They had ignored what the program said. Downloading gave me a very small (MZ) DOS executable which looked harmless enough and whose answers seemed plausible. There is a vague possibility that it might be an attack vector for malware but no AV software has alerted yet.

cheers fir the reply

i emailed a guy who reccomended these as a starter point;

chokes 30

mains 115

airs 200

em.tube f11

idles 45f8

pump 35

n/valve 150

but from the figures on that program 30 chokes might seem a little to big, i may be wrong but isnt 28mm chokes the smallest available?

also i just wanted the carbs for general use, mostly low down power if anything

cheers.

28mm chokes if you want everyday driveability

Airs seem a little large, will reduce the response of the main jet if put on 28mm chokes

the problem with emission carbs is that they rely on a idle 'feedback' circuit to use all of the fuel in the idle passageways before activating the mains. The use of large idles will stop the car from hesitating but extends the idle and progression phase as the mains come in later due to the diminished venturi signal. Adding the sleeves will give more adaptability but still doesn't get round the fact that the emission carbs introduce more air into the emulsion tubes and thus normally have bigger jets. This is the main reason why they don't work that well with anything under 1500cc

7848.4 vents - no idea, try it!!

Hi, any one using DCOE with 28mm Chokes, if so what size jets n stuff are you using and any problems. I'm thinking of changing my chokes as I'm going through petrol as if its free..need to come down from 32mm to 28mm....

32mm chokes and no rampipes. You must have had to scream the nuts off that thing!!

i don't really have a clue on weber emulsion tubes, but if its a straight 1300 then dellortos would want

48-50idle, 7850.1 holder.

110-112main

7 tube

150-160 corrector

33pump

1 vent

28mm choke.

that gets on the mains quite early, good for driveability.

make sure the fuel levels are even and accurate, you'll probably find that the emulsion tubes are being inundated with fuel and costing you money!

Hi, any one know where i get 26/24mm weber chokes from as per the program only seen 28mm for sale!

carbfront.jpg

I NEED THAT ADAMPTER PLATE!!!!!!!! UNDER THE CARB FOR THE GK INLET MANIFOLD!! I've GOT A WEBER CARB I ITS GOT A DIFF 3 BOLT HOLE RUBER PLATE ON IT!!!

where can i get that plate????

I've started a HELP thread in this section with the pictures!

Edited by mk1nuts

webcon...got mine late last year....about 40quid posted iirc

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!! 40 BUCKS!! SHIT THE BED!!!!!

you got a link dude??

give em a call.how i did it..

yer found the site i googled it! cheers

thats i thought you would of done as i carnt see it anywer on there cheers mate hows the jetta treating you?!

aaaaaa i ve just been told that this plate wont fit as its for a win choke carb and mines a single one so what do i do?? buy a hk inlet maifold???

make your own an option? Or get a twin choke, much better!

yep just baged my self a twin choke for 50 notes!!!buzzin haven't seen it tho haha

Hi, Right have a laugh at what i have been runing will need to change soonest.....32mm chokes idle jet 50F8, emulsion tube with 180 AIR,F11 tube and 130 main...No wonder it would drink petrol and seem to run much better when i would close throttle they all need to come down in vallue.am looking at something nearer program for drivabilty.
