popped back to my parents house to borrow their printer and thought i'd check my levels whilst i was there as thats where all my tools are.

I opened my bonnet to find.............no expansion tank cap! D'oh.

I cant remember the last time i checked it although i have a sneaking idea that i was in a rush one morning to get to work and the coolant light came on so i undid the cap, put more coolant in and i swear blind i put the lid back on! Obviously not!

Bless my other half whos now doing a 30mile round trip to pick a new one up from VW. Roughly £8 inc VAT !!!!

Gonna put a string on this one attached to the bulkhead just incase!!!!

Lucky for me it aint summer otherwise i couldve been in serious trouble! I even drove to Skeg the other week and i have a feeling it wasn't on then either!

£7.96 or there abouts for a new cap.

i dont this too and didnt notice till i seen my water dissapearing in the rear view mirror needless to say i pullyed over very quickly

I did it, drove down the road an thought "Did i put it back on?", pulled over and its gone, ran up and down the road (Mile or two) and couldnt find it, looked back in the engine bay and it was ballanced near the bottom. FFS.

I had the best the other night, my drive belt came off on the golf just before I got rid of it, battery light came on, water temp, then realsied what it was, pulled over, and though, "wait, did I leave the old drive belt in the engine bay...." But no, that was the new one!!! Haha! God knwos how it stayed there!!! Lol

i bet its balanced somewhere

or the driveshaft had a good meal

I was having flashes of seeing my engine go pop! lol.

Me and my dad had a good look in the engine bay to see if it was wedged somewhere but no luck. The road to my house is rather bumpy in places and i do tend to put my foot down in places as the road just seems to go on forever so it could be anywhere. It was manky and faded anyway and was chewed where i had to use the VW wheelbrace to get it undone when i did it up too tight so a new one just looks better.

One lost cap in 10+ years of motoring aint too bad really. At least i didnt forget to put wheelnuts back in (although my mate did that to me once before :mad: )

not exactly the same thing, but similar...

my friend filled up at the petrol station the other night, she left her cap on the roof of her car and drove off,

this was in tesco with the stupid bendy entrances,

come to meet me at tesco and realised she left it on her roof...

it obviously slid off the roof round the entrance road.

we drove back to get it and we watched the big tesco lorry drive over it, crushing it into many pieces..

god i laughed!

I've left all sorts in the bay,and subsequently lost them - including a set of bike carb jets and a mobile phone

get yourself some of these for the winter mate

Similar story, when i had my saxo i bought a pair of trims for it £20 but when i put them on didnt put them on properly (my own fault), so when i drove one fell off, didnt notice till about 1/4 of mile up the road so pulled over and ran back just in time to watch a big beefy wagon drive over it and smash it to pieces.. i was GUTTED. LOL!!

A bloke I used to work with did this with the oil cap on a brand new sprinter. 5 miles down the road the oil light came on.

Sufficed to say, the engine on that van is never gonna rust.

I've had it with an exhaust trim too. Wasn't too bothered as i found it at work but i heard it fall off so i turned round and when i found it, it had lorry tyres imprints over it!
