D.i.y Retrim Update.2 - Rear Seats Basically Done

Featured Replies

thought i would make a post on here of my D.I.Y retrim ...

its more a less how to than anything to help you lot out if you want to go the cheap and easy way I'm going with the trim

starting from the roof lining, then going to the doorcards and seats

i have only just finsihed doing the passengers side doorcard and took around half hour hour to get it spot on , will be doing the drivers side tommorow and start retrimming the rear bench

roof lining:

take the lining off by undoing the screws that are holding the grab handles on and remove the grab handles do the same with the sun visors and also take out the interior light which is just slotted in .

get the material you want to cover it in , cut it to shape and place it over the lining how u think it looks best the get some strong adhesive spray glue which you can get from halfrauds or anywhere like that and pull back the material a little bit at a time workin from top to bottom / bottom to top spraying the glue along the lining and then replace the material over the glue and rub it with your hands to get all the trapped air out and also any creases making sure its sticking aswell.

do this the hole lining and your on to a winner ...

once the middle section is glue ,around the edges - fold it over and use a hot glue gun to stick the edges to the back of the lining so it dont come loose and baggy .

any holes for bolt ect. cut out from the back and glue with hot glue on the back agin to gett it tight and not baggy.

It should end up looking like this once back in :

doorcards:

take the door card off is a good start...

on the mk4 there is a ridge that has been glued down from the factory so you cant see the end of the material , get a knife/ anything sharpish and flat then gently ease it up so the material can be slide up inside the ridge to look flushed once this is done top and bottom get the material you are going to retrim it in and cut it to size leaving more than enough material if it goes tits up .

again lay it in postion that you want it .. i then paced the material in the ridge at the top end and lifted up the material and sprayed the strong adhesive on the original material on the doorcard and then re layed the new material back into position again gently smoothing it over with your hand so all the creases and air gets out so it stricks smooth .. do this on the hole patch of material untill it is coverd , then at the other end cut the material in a line so it can again sit in the ridge and look flushed , also dont forget the fold back the edges around the handle end and where you hold on to to shut the door if you no what i mean , fold the hang over material onto the back of the doorcard pulling it tight so it stays tight and smooth .

and the end of it , it should look like this :

ACAR010.jpg

ino it seems complicated and the way i have written it dont really help or simplify things but if you want any more info on how to do it just ask and i will try explain a easier way ... i thought this would be a good post as I've had alot of people pm me and ask me how to do trimming yourself after i posted in my w.i.p

hope this helps and aint a waste of my time wrting all this lol

will hopefully update a lil tommorow once i have started retrimming my half leather ibiza seats :D

cheers

managed to trim the drivers door last night and trimmed the rear doors today and also my nan finished trimming one panel of the rear seats took her 4 hours to do 1 panel and she has got to do 7 so hopefully she will have it all done easily by 2 weeks

as for the rear doorcards they was a nightmare but i know how to do it proply now and alot of patience is needed , i tried getting new doorcards as mine had 6x9 holes in them and couldnt deal with that but breakers yards want £30 for them so i decided i would try someting with the holes out of old ikea table matt lol dont look to terible but dont look great lol

anyway heres the pics of the doorcards done and one bit of seat :.:

Great guide man, very good work too, love the purple, did you trim your boot install too?

I'd be happy to pay that kidan price for you to do mine, though it wouldnt be for a while, Essex is a bit far like lol.

Mines an Openair too so wouldnt need the roof lining doing, possibly door cards and seats, if i can get materials etc.. defo something id like doing eventually though ;)

Edit: Should be copied and sticked to be honest ;)

all pm's replied to

thanks for the nice comments everyone

looks fantastic man! very good, theres nothing better than that feeling after you work on your car, and it looks fantastic!

my question is:

how did you get the edges so neat on the B pillars? very good!

also, when taking out the door cards on the front... I'm not quite sure what you mean by the plastic edge.

is it on the door handle itself? or on the top part of the door card, where it is between the glass and the plastic?

sorry if I'm a bit thick here, I'm having a long day haha

ill get around to doing it soon, as soonas i have money again:)

shame ill be getting a rollcage soon and might have to take my liner out:(:(

Nice one mate!!! i've been waiting for this post to pop up!!! looking fresh!!!

where'd you get your material from? can you get all diff colours?
