basically where do you stand when it comes to driving the car to the mot place?

A car can be driven to an mot testing station but it must be driven directly there (ie not stopping at the shops etc)

and it must be for a pre-aranged booking at an mot testing station oh and still has to have insurance.

Whether it passes or fails you are allowed to drive it back.

In normal circumstances your insurance would be invalid but in this case you are following the law and doing everything appropriately.

Plus if your stopped you have to have insurance regardless.

hmm odd really not sure on the tax issue.

if you are booked in with the test station by appointment then you can drive there no worries. but some subsection crap of the law states if you have no tax then you are not insured so a freindly policeman told me a little while back.

probably best to double check with your insurers to see if you're covered.

the enforcement of this also relies on the discretion of the copper. (the distance to the mot station also has to be reasonable, ie driving a car from scotland to london for an mot is not really resonable).

As long as you play things by the book and dont take the piss then you've nothing to worry about :)

but anyone got any official info that states this?

if you ask your insurance company they may give you insurance on an exsisting policy that covers you for that car for 1 day........ i've done this before (at least once)

not sure if all companys do this though

minimum maybe 1 month as an additional car....... may not be too much £££ if its a little engine car

i'm sure your OK driving back from MOT station if the car fail's......... make sure you have the fail sheet with you & the phone number of the test centre incase your stopped

....

only problem i can see is if you know it's going to fail

best you can do is make sure all the lights work properly & all the tyres are very legal...... rather than nearly legal

you are allowed to drive to a pre-booked mot, with no stopping for the shops or anything of the like, We drove my dads ladny rover to its first mot in 4 years last year, we had no tax, mot and no insurance. I remeber my dad saying you can drive it only to and from the mot station with out the tax or insurnce, weather it has changed recently i dont know.

I'm a woman, what can I say

I was driving mine around for nearly 2 weeks before I knew the MOT had run out and as far as I was aware I should have towed it to the garage where the MOT was being done, obviously I was wrong to worry

I took the risk and thought I could butter the oldbill up if I got busted on the way there

I would have thought the same tbh and must have insurance

you can drive it back regardless of whether you pass or fail. ( just the reverse of getting it there, you must drive it straight back with no stops)

afaik, tax and current ticket are irrelevant, but insurance is advised for your own sake (a good mate who has any vehicle 3rd party cover in writing is helpful, as are trade plates and trade policies)

You can drive a car with no tax or MOT to a pre-booked MOT that's within a reasonable distance to your house.

The car must be insured (to cover third parties). If the car passes you must drive it straight home and put it off the public road until you tax it. In theory you can't stop at the post office on the way to tax it.

If it fails you must drive it straight home.

They say next to some of the fails something along the lines of "Advised not to drive", i had a couple when my tyres were rubbing against the suspension.
