One of the exhaust hanging pronges hitting against the rear beam. Jack the car up, get it on axle stands, find the offending pronge and find a way of shortening it. I got mine heated up then wacked it with a hammer, knocked it right off...end of noise :)

sweet, it seams to be coming from the drivers side at the back?

cheers

Your exhaust is on the passenger side but its the only thing it could be really.

Have you tightened up your top nuts on the rear suspension since fitting the coilies?

i have had a look this morning. and there rear bolts are all fine.

and i cant see what can be hitting.

on the rears, the rear wishbone seams to be close to the inside of the wheel.

could it be that hitting the wheel?

cheers

wheels hitting the arches?

  • Author

nah not hitting arches i dont think, well not the outside of the arches. would it be hitting the inner arches?

cheers

There is no rear wishbone on the Mk4? Its just a solid rear beam joining the two wheels together. You will need to get the car on ramps to see if the exhaust is hitting, jacking it up makes the rear beam sag meaning it gives the exhaust the clearence it should have.

I just hacksawed that exhaust bracket off, was a bit hard to get to so i was there a while!

but surely if it was the exhaust it wouldnt do it when rocking the car would it?

it sounds like its coing from the drivers side.

its hard to tell.

cheers

It does, i used to get mine to make the sound by lifting the rear passenger side arch up then down.

took it to the garage today, the bloke had it up and he says the exhaust pipe is only just clearing the rear beam. he said the only way of doing it is to heat it up and bend the exhaust pipe up.

you guys think its that then?
