15" Kicker L5 Ground/earth Problem

ICE Setup:

Kicker/SoloBaric 15L5

Directed 750d Amplifier

Okay basically me and my mate wired up a 15" Kicker L5 subwoofer with a Directed Audio 750d amplifier

basically...the problem I'm getting is that...it sometimes cuts out...the gain has been turned down on the amp, subsonic switch is off, bass switch is off on the amp aswell...

but when music is played the sub cuts out i then have to turned down the Hz setting on the Pioneer DEH P6000UB Headunit to -10Hz and even then the sub still cuts out...

both of us think that it could be the ground problem...

does anyone have any good idea's as to where i should re-ground it...currently its grounded on the screw that is next to the rear shock on the drivers side...(where the rear light bulb holders are...just behind that (looking towards the rear seat) the shock is there...and theres a screw with a washer holding on the plastic trim that covers the shock, etc...

its grounded there, the paint has been scratched off so that its bare metal and there is still the problem of the sub cutting out

does anyone know what the problem could be or any help ?

cheers

Sonic

sounds more like the amp is going into protect because it is not powerfull enough for the sub and you a playing distortion causing the sub coils to get hot increasing resistance and shutting the amp down

but i would also reccomend you move the earth to a seat belt bolt as the earth point you are using is seriously inadequate especially as the light holder is plastic so you will have very little metal surface contact

what wireing kit have you used to wire it in

?

and teh specs of it please?

um...its an 4Gauge wiring kit, thats all i know...with Phoenix Gold RCA's

its not on the actual light holder its just to the left of the shock theres a screw that hold on the trim panel so its in between the screw and the metal where the hole isa

Heres how its grounded:-

I've also realised that when the sub is played on low volume for a while...about 20/30 minutes...after that when it gets turned up the bass seems to come through properly

also when the sub does cut out the protect light doesn't light up on the amp

i have no idea what the problem could be

can anyone help me asap

that earth still does not look good enough to me

that earth still does not look good enough to me

any idea's where i could ground it too then ?

I've got a mark5

and I'm pretty sure the amp isn't the problem...because when the sub DOES cut out...the red protect light doesn't turn on on my directed amp

seat belt bolt

without actually testing the coils to make sure they are wired correctly etc it could be one or more things causing problems

seat belt bolt

can you get a picture of the mounting point as I'm confused where it is...also...what do you mean by "without actually testing the coils to make sure they are wired correctly etc it could be one or more things causing problems" ??

what other problems do you think it could be ?

You sure its wired up properly?

The sub is dual voice coil isnt it?

The sub is dual voice coil isnt it?

yeah its a dual voice coil sub

I'm pretty sure its wired up properly...well me and my mate wired it up...so I'm pretty sure its done properly...its either an amp problem or its a ground problem...thats all i can see it as being

i still think its your amp

if you have a dual 4 ohm l5 sub then the most power you are going to get is 400 rms@14.4 volts @ 2 ohm

if you have the dual 2 ohm l5 then the most power you will get if 600 rms@14.4 volts @ 1 ohm

these measurements are at the aforementioned reccomended impedance(1 ohm/2ohm)

realistically the amps will be seeing an actual load of around say between 6-13 ohms taking into consideration box rise temperature and tuning frequency so you may find that the true power the sub is getting will be VERY low around maybe 250 rms @1 ohm

the minimum reccomended rms for either of these subs is 750 rms

so i still say regardless of the clipping led not coming on you are underpowering the sub and causing it to shut down

hmm...cheers for that...

http://www.drdetailshop.com/d750d.htm <--- currently...thats the amp I've got

Rated Power @ 4 ohm: 275 x 1

Rated Power @ 2 ohm: 400 x 1

Rated Power @ 1 ohm: 600 x 1

as listed these are the continuous rms figures at 14.4 volts will also be less with engine off 12 volt tops

hm...cheers for the info..ill try and get a new amp then and see if that sorts it out

Thats sounds about right really.. i have known people to mess up DVC wiring though.. so just in case..

1_2ohmDVC_1ohm.gif

1_4ohmDVC_2ohm.gif

Which version is the L5? Looks like, even if its a 2ohm DVC it wont be getting its RMS..

My SX15 is rated at 1000wrms, powered by a Hifonics 1200wrms class D, and it never got full volume, not even close to distorting..

Taking into account voltage drops, the current draw from your battery, wiring (i dont have 0-gauge) etc etc, the power that the amp can supply the sub consistantly can drop, quite alot, hence why with powerful subs, the amp should ideally have a higher WRMS rating, to allow for that bit of headroom.

what sounds about right ?...that i need a more powerful amp ? but then agian after a while say 20/30 minutes...i can turn the music up to about 35 volume...usually its played at 15/20 and the sub wont cut out i dont get it

um...its a 15" Kicker L5 (Gold Coloured Cone) also I'm using 4 Gauge wiring i think

  • Author

okay i just got back from a little drive...after about 10 minutes i turned the volume up on the head unit and the sub was stable...no distortion nothing, this is why I'm thinking it isn't the amp...can anyone explain to me why some days the sub doesn't cut off and some days why it does ?...becuase i really dont understand it

bump

anyone ?

can someone help describe where the seat belt bolt is as i am not sure. obviously, i don't want to go round fiddling with the seatbelt not knowing what i'm doing.

if you can take a picture, that would be even better! :-D

x2

i would like to know this aswell

Try earthing to the long bolt that holds the spare wheel in, make sure its secure and rub it down to bare metal.

Sounds to me like yuve got completely the wrong amp for the sub...

I'm crap when it comes to understanding ohms and impedance but I'm sure if you get yourself down to your local decent audio store(not halfords) they will be more than happy to check it over quickly(and foc if they're any good)

hm....maybe...starting to think its the amp now

I'm pretty sure its wired down to like 1Ohm aswell...fuckin thing didn't even come on at all today...pisstake lol

cheers will try that out

Apart from proper ground and wiring etc.. if that doesnt help try www.talkaudio.co.uk very knowledgeable guys on there.
