Just got my polo last night, it's a mark 4 1.9tdi. I opened the bootlid this morning and a "thing" made a noise on the right hand side of the boot, in where the First Aid kit used to be. Looks like a pump of some sort.

What is it?

yea its not that big considering the pipes go all the way to the dash then into the doors, the boot and the fuel cap lol it is pretty loud

the compressor pump is in my mind, the worst idea vw ever came up with for a central locking idea!

i know so many people with vags need they have dodgy central locking due to air leaks in the pipers or the pump

why not just motors in the doors like other companies use!!

while your on- wrap a plastic bag around it, cos moisture knacks them up and rear lights are a pain for leaking- that was a problem i had anyhow. got a new pump and taped a tescos bag round it. top banana.

main problem I've heard of is the pipes coming off leaving you with no central locking

Lol mine sounds like it's crying when I open it with remote central locking

Discovered today that mine is actually leaking air. Someone has put electrical tape around it, and its hissing. When you push the hose into the pump it stops hissing though. Need to have a fiddle with it now.

common fault unfortunately

mine went after i cot too close to the rear lights with a pressure washer. locked its self half way down the road. had to climb out the door as the interior handles stopped working lol. it was used cos it was cheap. one pump a few pipes and a small bag in each door is a lot cheaper to produce than 2 or 4 different door locks a load of wiring and the ecu to controll it. i got the hump with mine in the end so found a mk4 golf at the scrappy and got the complete locking system from that lol. mission fitting it but i got the flick key now too lol
