Featured Replies

well after some random tosser drove into the side of girlfriends car and pissed off, they are now writting it off

and have valued her 100k miles, 16v 3 door mk4 at £845

she paid £1500 for it and has spent money on the cam belt going, head gasket, new tyres, and clutch all in last 6 months, totalling about £500

she insured it for £2000 as thats what it is worth to her

I'm no good with claiming, what does she do now????

buy it back and fix it on the cheepo, they stitch you up with market value no matter what you say it's worth or insure it for.

i had a mk1 golf driver, bought it off a driveway where it had been sat for 8 years covered in moss, tyres perished brakes, bushes suspension, interior all knackered. i replaced everyting from the carpets to the a later spec polo engine, seats, hoses, brakes polybushes full suspension, b/n carb (webber), wheels, bumpers - you name it! was a proper restoration as the shell was mint. all declared and insured for minimum of £1500 which was still cheap, couple of months later someone pulled out on me and twisted the chassis legs.

after all the insurance malarky they came out and gave me £300 for it - thats what i paid for it when i bought it moss and all!

they pay you what they like!

i also was crashed into in my old mk4 golf gti turbo, i had just fitted b/n fk coily's, porsche rims and lower arms, i was hit side on and pushed me up a curb. they admitted liability and it went in for repair and i was told 'you won't get paid out for suspension damage' so i got it all inspected and signed off as;

bent suspension leg

bent lower arm

cracked 2 teeth off internally on the steering rack

damaged driveshaft and cracked knuckle casing

also was mentioned the gearbox maybe damaged (diff bearings) - turns out it was!!

i didn't get paid out for any of it and they refused to take it into consideration so cost me just shy of £1500 from my own pocket to right it.

THEN, i'd just put new tyres on all round and the curb and car had taken out chunks from the side walls, also not covered! this was fully comp insurance and i was mugged!

sorry for your losses and fully sympathise with your situation!

Soo what the hell is the point in agreeing a value of your car if they wont pay you that amount? insurance companies suck..

hi

have a look on auto trader and see what the same car is going for.

then tall the insurance company what the cars on auto trader are going for they should up there offer

hope this helps

go down to you are local advise bureau mate, they will be able 2 poinr u in the right direction-- maybe go through the courts. its a possibility?

I think this happened to MrP's mum quite a few years back when they were newer and worth a lot more. From what I've heard of other peoples experiences you need to contest their offer and provide evidence that proves the car has a much higher value than what theyve offered. Look for as many examples as possible, with as close to the exact same spec as yours, and show that the prices are higher. If yours has any special features eg factory options, rare colour etc, you need to highlight these. And mention that if the car was insured for an agreed value, it was on the basis that in the event of a claim, that was the amount both parties agreed you would be paid. Your premium does not equal the value of the car though.

Examples could be ebay, autotrader, car dealership sites, any proof that you can print out and email to them that shows your model has been commonly sold at circa £1500. You could include for sale threads on forums to back up other proof, but dont rely on these alone as we all know that forum prices are not representative of average sale prices!

I remember a case of a guy on e38 with a particularly rare spec'd mk2 gti, took him months to find in that condition and they offered him a price which would have been an outrage for any average gti. He had to send proof that lower spec/less desireable models went for more than theyd offered and then had to try find examples of the same spec to prove its true worth. It isnt easy but its worth the fight imo... dont forget that most people will just accept the first offer as 'thats life', so they get away with fobbing people off.

they gave me £265 for my gt. Just ring them up and tell them you don't accept the offer.

I can't see the point of valueing a car as you never receive that.

Good luck matey.

i got £400 for a car that i had valued at £1400, which was what i had paid for it. i also insured the mods, keeping the value of 1400 on the policy.

insurance is a joke. it is a legal con if you ask me, you have to have it, but they never help you when you need them. i hate insurance companies, and anybody that works for them, helping to screw over the uk's motorists.

sorry, rant over lol

anyway, yeah refuse offer and send in adverts of similar cars worth nearer to 2k for them to up the offer.

always question the valuatuion, check the assesors report and if anything is wrong you have them by the balls (eg saying steel wheels when it has alloys)

submit adverts showing how much it would cost to replace.

when you state the value in the phone to an insurance company that means nothing - i have a proper agreed value on mine, and when i add anything to it i have to call them up and state the mod and the value to be added - currently at £3800 for a mk2 golf vr6

On my policy it says 'market value', leaving them open to rip you off.

I've gotta renew in a week, so I'm making sure to cover all mods and have a written agreed value.

The funny thing is that I bet if the boot was on the other foot and you put down the value of your £2k car as £500, the insurance company would fight tooth and nail to make sure they only had to give you the £500.

Tis all a con :(

Standard 6Ns are worth about 900quid and thats what I received AND the car.

Question the valuation and try and haggle the value of the car and the car itself

Hiya,

The best thing you can do is to call the insurance company and tell them that you are unhappy and calmly explain your reasons for why you would value it as more then they have.

Also back up your claims with pictures from Auto trader etc of cars that have similar spec and are selling for more. If you have receipts for any mods or work done forward that on as well.

Dan.

oh cheers for all the replies, yes we spoke to them but they arent budging, its funny they said recent work carried out doesnt change the value.

Then on the flipside sent 2 autotrader adverts, £700 and £900, both were high milage and no work carried out!

find me a 16v thats just had cam belt and head gasket done, and 4 new tyres for £1000 i will eat my own soggy shit.
