Comments:

Bought this car off Lucy as a daily runaboutu while i finished the engine conversion on my previous daily which failed on me =[ . The car was previously owned by Manked Out now Blug on the forums, a good friend of mine and he was pleased to see the car coming back to manchester. Previous owner to that was a gentleman named Ade, who now has a scooby powered T4 bus =D

Anyway the little Coupe S is on 115k, The Car runs sweet as a nut, as was absolutely faultless bar misfiring and loss of power on sporadic random occasions. I decided the best course of action was a mini service, new Spark Plugs / Leads / Oil Change / Oil & Air Filter, still didnt solve it. So next step was to rule out the Hall Sender. Got a known working MH dizzy off Manked Out and still the misfire would rear its head. I could always get to my destination as 2 minutes idle time and we were good to go again.

After taking the airbox off, we cleaned out the oil breather pod, replaced a few vacuums and reinstalled the previously missing exhaust heatsheild, as the current ducting just wasnt feeding enough warm air into the carb. After getting the heatsheield on thanks to Karl all is good, its a mk1 polo one at the moment, will stick a mk2 one soon as the outlet hole is the same diamter as m y current tubing but it seems like the problems resolved.

I've done about 2k miles in it since I've owned it and loving every minute

Not feeling the OZ's but it does look good on the teardrops 8-) Get that back box tucked up and it'll look even better.

If you want it to handle, you'll be better off with the wishbone/subframe conversion and a cheaper 60mm suspension kit.

The GT engine and box conversion would top it all off very nicely.

i have the latter, budget lowering kit and PPS frame. and having not driven a car with a HnR kit i can offer you no direct comparison, however a subframe of any variety is the best handling mod you'll do. all i can say is make sure you have a rear beam with an anti roll bar (gt/g40), no anti roll bars at all isnt ideal.

(This be Grungeisdead)

Cheers for the replies guys!

The teardrops are currently sitting on the Mk1 GT at the moment. They may be rocked out again, I've got a funky colour scheme to them if i get round to painting them, although the paint on them at the moment is in mint condition, theres just a couple of slight kerbing marks.

I am either looking into getting the backbox tucked up, theres not much i can do at the moment due to the factory remus hanger for the exhaust so ideally i need to get someone to weld me 2 new hangers on the backbox to be able to bring it closer to the floorpan, either than or get another system off another car.

I've ordered the PPS Subframe now in CDS, also picked up the G40 TCA's & Steering Arms.

Once I've got hold of a lowering kit, ill be fitting all the above and my 256mm brake conversion, that'll see me happy for a while.

Interior wise, theres some chrome/wood affair winders that need replacing for originals, and I'm after getting the seat bases for my recaros welded to some mk2 golf subframes I've got so i can get them fitted in.

Pete - Cheers for the advice on the ARB, I've got a GT Rear Axle up at the unit in manchester, I've been debating whether to use it, but I've decided to now to clean it up and give it a lick of hammerite and rebuild it all back up with passat rear drums.

Precilla has come on a long way since you first got her. Be really interested to see the benefits a subframe can make, as you'll be running a virtually identical chassis set-up to me with the G40 goodies and GT rear axle fitted. GT conversion would top it all off a treat :-).

nice lttle coup, really thought the mk1 bumpers looked healthy on it

Aye I'm Intrigued to see the difference too as your GT has always handled better than i thought it would especially around tight corners and at speed round roundabouts. I'm sometimes touching cloth tbh as i dont believe polos can handle that well. I think i should wait to do the whole lot together (Subframe, Lowering Kit, TCAs, TRAs, Rear Axle & VAG rear axle bushes and front TCA->subframe bushes) but who knows ill probably get bored of looking at the subframe when it arrives and stick it on anyway. Impatience ftl =]

Cheers matey, I did really quite like them but i got beef from the fuzz about not rocking a front plate and i couldnt be bothered drilling into my front panel to mount them so i sacked it off. Plus winter isnt the best time to be rocking chrome either.

If i was to do them again id just use a mk1 golf number plate holder and job would be a good un

Had a productive xmas/new years spell

- Tidied up Stereo Wiring and got the power ariel working on a switch

- Tidied up harness pre tensionier wiring

- Ordered HnR Cup Kit 70/60 and G-Ladersiete Outer TCA Polybushes

- Got a new glovebox as my ones fubarred

- Got 2 bare mk3 struts which I'm going to wire-brush, paint and get new vag bearings pressed in

- Went on a 300 mile round trip for pick up a full custom exhaust that was fitted on a mk2 loon for 60 miles and fitted that with the help of friends, chopped down the tailpipe as it stuck out miles. not decided on where i want the final chop to be and if I'm going for an upswept. But its a straight-through mid section with single silencer and sounds amazing =]

we picked up the banded steelies too, they are proper nice and were welded by a qualified engineer and welder, happy days.

they will be coming to a very special vw, not one of mine however but on loan to a very good friend

Woop, Goodies arrived yesterday morning in the post.

Subframe Conversion

G-LaderSeite TCA Polybushes.

Drilled out the old bushes and fitted the TCA polybushes.

Tomorrows plan are :-

Get Bearings removed from Spare pair of Mk3 Struts

Wire Brush Struts

Wire Brush G40 Steering Arms

Wire Brush G40 TCA's

Get them all in primer, ready for 2 coats of satin black.

Pick up 2 Wheel Bearing Kits from GSF, which contain

41215K x 2 - 24.30

Wheel Bearing

Hub Nut

Tie Rod Nut

Ball Joint Nut

I have new bolts and nuts for the rest of the front of the suspension set up.

I would like to know the size and thread of the bolt and nut that hold the bottom of the rear suspension to the axle, if anyone could help.

Well with the help of Karl and Yeti, we managed to get the following fitted over the last couple of days.

PPS Subframe/Wishbone Conversion

HnR Cup Kit 60/60

10mm Lowering Top Caps

G40 Track Control Arms with G-Ladersiete Bushes

G40 Steering Rack Bracket, Steering Arms & Damper

I'll get to feel the real benefits when i get it tracked up tomorrow and I'm not used to the steering damper, it makes the steering feel far lighter, tis like power steering *bleurgh* I'm sure alot of that lightness will be removed when the tracking is set bang on, and ill just have to get used to it, but i think i might take it off in a month or so and see the difference it makes on its own.

Right pictures time, unfortunatly as i ran out of battery i didnt take any of the subframe fitted from underneath, or during the fitting of the steering arms and damper (as its not very interesting )

DSC01185.jpg

karl and me had to enlarge two of the holes on the passenger side arb mounting point as it was about 2.5mm. We first had the worlds smallest file, then moved on to a big fucking drill and an even bigger drill bit and that was soon elongated enough in the right direction

DSC01188.jpg

old rear shocks

DSC01178.jpg

new shocks and springs fitted

DSC01180.jpg

Its a good job this lot was replaced as the existing suspension setup was pooned, every shock was buggered and both tca arb bushes were well past thier bests, also to say my brake pads and discs were a little thin was the understatement of 2009  Charamon let me borrow the use of her pads from dennis (her derby) and steve refaced some discs for me, until i can get new bleed nipples for the 256mm brakes as they are pretty much siezed to fook

beruit

DSC01182.jpg

i will take piccies tomorrow of the car lowered in zee daylight, may even wash it hahaha

but heres one for now, with prescillas lil red relative

DSC01195.jpg

also a note for anyone interested, the banded steels are for sale now, pm me if interested

Again, good work bois

some pics in the daylight, car got its first hoover ever hahaha, it was like beruit since i use the floor as an ashtray since vw didnt decide to give the driver an ashtray on the right, grr

Good stuff, what are you going for in terms of castor? i have mine setup to a 2350mm wheelbase, makes for quite heavy steering at slow speeds. i'll wind it back one day.

no idea what that makes in terms of castor angle but its 15mm over standard.

Alright man,

Cheers for the advice by pm, norm like you said was a legend and I'm well impressed with the subframe.

My wheelbase before was 2340mm on drivers, 2325mm on passengers, hence the need to elongate the holes slighty.

Its now set up at 2340mm on both, and my steerings really light at low speeds, and very precise at 25 plus but it may be due to the G40 damper as karl mentioned to me. Ill report back when the trackings done and let you know how it is, have you got a damper on yours?

(oops chars login, tis saf)

Edited by Charlie

nah, no damper, i thought that was for stopping torque steer, just my arms and the wheel, best way haha.

be good to have a nose around at the RR day, see whats what.

  • Author

karl said that the damper will help stop torque steer and stop the wheel from jolting about when hitting pot holes which really was the main reason its been fitted, as i do loads of countryside driving and the roads are never smooth, id prefer to be safe in that fact that if i am driving enthusiastically and hit a rut or pothole etc then I'm not going to end up in the nearest bush

Good work matey, this deserves something abit more spesh then a 3f i think Saf.

  • Author

thanks man, aye i know, I've been tempted to run an AFH with a GT box on Coupe S igntion like heg, hopefully he will iron out the problems he had with the coil overheating and wont have to go down the standalone engine management route as it pushes up the cost!

Will get round to doing something with the engine when this dies, but hopefully that wil be a long way away and the lupolo should be finished by then

Sounds good mate, mines died

Need a temp engine asap, stuck at uni with no car or breakdown cover, ooops.

Could do with finding a 1.0 engine local to me for pennys until i get my 1.6 rebuilt.

  • Author

shitter that gutted to hear that, like i said in a pm speak to Karl Charlie or Yeti and they should be able to sort you out with an engine, or a cheapo runabout.

Had the tracking done today, car feels 10million times more responsive, just need to in the next couple of days, recheck and retighten all the bolts and happy days. It does feel slightly suspect with no arb on the front, I've not cornered in anger yet but i fear the back may end up slipping out. Argh really wanna get on a track or some private road so find out the handling characteristics as on the road you cant really experiement and it just feels like a very sorted polo for daily mincing, although the roads in manchester are fooooooooknig terrible, bastards

Sounds good fun man, is back wheel cocking achievable with the stiffer front end?

  • Author

i dont know and I'm not going to try on the public roads dude and to be honest i dont really know what the handling characteristics are going to be like and because I've changed so much stuff all at once which pretty much holds the front end and steering together I've been slightly on the edge of my seat, once its all tightened and checked and i can get to a track day i shall report back with findings =]

job for next month is to get my gt rear arb shotblasted and powdercoated, rebuilt with 200mm drums and fitted, as well as either doing 239 or 256s on the front, should get the 256s shot blasted and painted up on the lupolo with the spare hnr kit I've got

yum
