right as some of you know I've got a lil silver polo 16v but a few changes of plan and with an ambition of mine is to compete in rallying I've started to prep the polo for tarmac rally stages, with the odd few gravel stages possibly :)

first of all i started off striping the interior out saved a good amount of weight here

then after a trip to ac services i got myself a nice set of corbeau pro-series bucket seats at a very good price with side mounts, these wer an absolute mission to fit and i think i may need to change the way they are mounted for when it comes to getting it msa logbooked but i will find out when it comes to that,

making the drivers seat mounts, very important to get this right as the seats are non adjustable as they're side mounted

mounting the co-driver seat nice and low and far back

and all mounted up

how the car stands now on the compomotive TH monos (marmite wheel i know but i love them)

hmm ok, but the question begs, why didn't you sell your original car and buy a genuine ex VWM challenge car, there was one recently went for about £4k which you are easily going to spend building your own.

and yes, you will have to change your seat mounts :) it may be an idea to read the blue book before you actually start building the car so you don't do it wrong

every things coming back out again to fit the cage when it arives so not a problem

also wheres the fun in buying a pre preped car?

considering i have been building my car properly for about the past 3yrs and i am nowhere near complete yet, i don't regard it as being fun. A challenge, yes, but given the opportunity again i would have saved my 5k and bought a challenge car. a second hand challenge car is massive spec in comparison and a far more financially viable asset.

infact, to an extent to go and start again i wouldn't bother building a polo at all.

shouting at you? i have told you my perspective on my project in relation to yours, there is no need to take offense so rapidly (which is the bigger problem on the forum imo, people biting at the first hint of constructive criticism)

and yes, the 09 blue book will have all sorts of obscure rules in it this time, you will need window film and mudflaps which extend +40mm out of the wheel arches and all sorts of other rubbish like weight limits (which i am under by about 100kg)

i just find some of the attitudes on here a bit off putting sometimes, soz to snap at you,

its driving me nuts reading the 2008 msa book on the mounting points for the seats,

i basicaly have 25mm x 25mm x 3mm box section welded between exhaust tunnel and inner cill then the side mounts bolted through the box section with m8 8.8 tensile bolts with a captive nut on the underside of the box section (if you catch my drift?)

do you have a build diary on here? or pics of your seat mountings in your mk3?

i stopped uploading pics to here of my car because i got idiot responses from people. and got sick of the clique telling me i am building my car wrong (when i know i'm not)

the problem with your seat rails is:

you have used seamed tube, which is a definite no, you need to use the same spec as rollcage tube, 3mm thick wall, seamless or CDS

if you have welded captive nuts on the bottom, the problem is the MSA see that as an issue because it can cause the box section to collapse.

this is the current FIA spec seat mounting diagram, i have done mien to this diagram but welded them onto spreader plates on the tunnel and inner sill. i've chopped that front cross member out as well and just got the rails in

as you can see they have put 8mm threaded inserts inside the box section to stop it collapsing and then gone for some sort of strange bolt in affair, i don't necessarily agree with.

yeh, that bit of folded tin work which forms the front seat mount. i ground out the spot welds and removed it and put my front bar of my seat where it used to be rather than welding to it like you have

Thats my old polo which was my first car! Made my stomach go funny when i realised it was my old polo and that it has no interior etc. Keep us updated with the build :)

cool mice to see another rally car in the making if you love a challange then building a polo rally car is the way to go lol. I have a good cage for a mk4 for sale if ure intersted. good work so far

^^^ i think that would depend what class you were going for... I'm guessing mini boy ian is going for somerset stages which has a 1400cc class. and I've seen a few valvers rally in that...

there is a big 1400cc championship in the uk, some cars running upto 200bhp. its not what you chose to rally, its what you make of it.
