Hi as some of you may know I have just bought a mk2 golf with the 1.3 MH engine same as in some of the mk2 polo's. I was just wondering what would a rough figure of miles per gallon be.

I only ask this because I know with the 1.6 driver it terrible worse than a mk2 gti 8v even.

The 1.3 MH engine in my Derby gives me around 38 - 40 mpg on a run - it's standard apart from an 8p gearbox.

Edit: I better add that i'm running little 7 x 13's with 175/50's, which spoils the economy a fair bit, and the Derby is about as aerodynamic as a brick going sideways!

My Mk2 Golf 1.3 was shocking on fuel, I was lucky to see 30 mpg, it's simply underpowered and the gearing is very short

In comparison, the same engine in my Mk2 Polo with the 8P 5 speed box barely dropped below 40 mpg and I coaxed it to 52 mpg on a 1200 mile round trip.

Might be looking out for a 5 speed gear box then..

Will a webber carb make it much worse?

Also considering a few bits like gt cam (need to replace fuel pump if so) 4branch..

Probably getting about 40-45mpg in mine. Bear in mind a Mk2 Golf is far heavier than a Polo though.

Economy in a GTI really depends on how you use it in a big way, mine was showing 45mpg when I had it, and to be honest, I think it probably wasn't far off right.

Yeah my dads mk2 gti just burns it like anything quick car(One of the quicker mk2 8v's iv'e been in) but my dad don't even drive it fast.

My mates mk2 8v's get 40ish

But his old 1.6 driver was like 20mpg

getting 44mpg in mine..5 speed and a weber

the derby is a damn sight more aerodynamic than a golf! infact derbys are damn slippery!
