256mm Brakes

Featured Replies

Right, I have a 256mm brake set up sitting in my shed doing nothing, and I was going to stick them on my GT in the New Year, with the some new braided hoses and a bigger master cylinder.

Now I have decided to sell the GT, so I will be fitting them to my mk2 coupe.

Now the question is, is how will effect the braking? The bigger master cylinder on the GT was to take up the slack from the increase in pedal movement due to pushing more volume of brake fluid with the larger brakes. But as the mk2 does not have servo-assisted brakes what do I need to do? or do I have to accept that they will always have long travel when fitted to a mk2?

unless you fit a remote servo or cut out the servo portion of the bulkhead out of a mk3 and weld it into a mk2 like katmk2polo has done on her bready, your always going to have a long pedal travel in your mk2.

Definatly fit them though, I have the same waiting to go on mine, just waiting for my subframe to come and ill fit them all at once

Not going to that kind of hassle with welding.

I guess i will have to put up with the longer travel then, trouble is though will it be too long??

should be ok, ill let you know in a couple of weeks when I've fitted mine. If it is too long its remote servo time =]

Could be a race to see who gets it done first then ;)

If its too long, think i might just sell them instead. Don't really need them to haul up the car really, its not going to be going that fast with only 55bhp!!!!

Swap to the 22mm master cylinder from the 16V mk2 Golf and Passat. Might need a big leg to make it work though.

i was under the impression that the larger master cylinder with no servo would increase the pedal stiffness but without a servo your still going to have to depress it pretty much all the way for full bite and theres no beast of a servo offering you assistance.

i may be wrong tho. I comtemplated fitting a 22.2mm servo on the muppet as it was an early golf and servoless, however the hole needed enlarging on the bulkhead to take account of the increase in size over the MC over the original. I never bothered in the end

Vented discs with decent pads and braided hoses on a mk2 with no servo still a pretty good brake setup, I'll have those 256's if you dont use them though Mark.

I might change the master cylinder for something a bit bigger when i swap the brakes over. I will try the orginal one first though and see how it goes.

The original one on the car must be getting a bit ropey by now anyway, so might be worth replacing it with something new, but will have to decide on the size later.

Phil, if i try it, and don't like it, you can have first refusal on the set :-)

il have second refusal - with cash waiting!

Hi, what set up do you need to run vented discs on early Mk2? have lateMK2 calipers and discs not the small square pads.

bumpage. Can you fit a 22.2mm master cylinder to a non-servo'd mk2?

i tried to fit one to my non-servod mk1 golf and i would have had to enlarge the bulkhead hole to allow the MC to fit properly and tighten up on the bolts, i didnt try it in the end and I'm unsure if the push rod pin would fit.

I'm asking as I'm planning on fitting my 256mm kit to the mk2 coupe very soon and dont want to find out when its fully bled pushing the pedal to the floor wont actualy push enough fluid to give me any braking whatsoever.

Cheers
