Riteyho i just gotta letter from the doovla saying i havnt retaxed my vehicle yadda yadda yadda please give me 80 pounds or 40 by january i sold that car like a year ago v5 went off and I'm sure i had a confirmation letter as well, buh I'm pretty sure that would of ended up in the shredder as i pretty much shred everything, also i put it on sorn year before cause it was off the road all its life. so its not like I'm trying to not pay tax as it takes 2 sec's to go on DVLA site and sorn the thing person i sold it onto was scrappers aswell so it was off to the graveyard

sent letter back explaining it etc anyone had previous experience with this or they just gonna go we dont care give us our money?

The DVLA should have a record stating that you sold the car and are no longer the registered keeper, failing that you could go to a magistrates court and explain the problem (happens a lot), they may be able to help and there is a chance that you could make a statutory declaration stating that your no longer the keeper of the car and you certainly didnt own it when this alleged offence occured but for now I would get stuck into the DVLA about it and see what happens and next time keep hold of documents that could save you this trouble if it ever happens again, good luck :-)

this kinda happened with my parents. sold a car, sent off the v5, then about 6 months later got a fine cos the tax had ran out. either the v5 got lost in the dvla or in the post. either way they explained the crack and the dvla let them off. dunno if that is standard proceedure or not tho.

this has happened to me recently but with a speeding fine even got a confirmation of transfer from dvla but like u i threw it away, luckily i sold the car on ebay and I'm going through ebay to recover sale date ect to pass on.

this has just happend to me got a £80 final notification for not taxing a car i scrapped in feb and sent the v5 back but i didnt get a reminder or a 1st fine i rang them up they said i have to send a letter when its there cock up.seams it happens alot

They're just totally inept - I've had some corkers:

I bought a car that the bloke had standing untaxd on the road at about 8pm, stuck it on the trailer, then signed it over, making a point to write a time in the tiny box with the date (because there's nowhere on the form to write the time). They sent me a find for having an untaxed car on the road at 10am that day.

I got a fine through for riding my (tax excempt) electric scooter round london on a SORN. The scooter was 200 miles away at the back of my old folk's garage at the time. They said they could demand the back tax off me, so I sent them a cheque for £0.00, signed Jack Shit.

I got one for not sorning a scrapped car. Strange as I put the notification of scrapping in with the tax when I sent it in, they refunded the disk fine.

yeah basterds sent me a final notification letter then finally replied to my letter and said although I've said I'm not keeper need to find details of sumit on v5c which i dont have as i sent em all the crap with the logbook and under that it pretty much says PAY ME PAY ME PAY ME money grabbers so I'm just gonna send em another letter saying

A. the car was beyond repair i could of sorn'ed it for free on the internet in 2 seconds if i was still holding it! why would i wanna incur an 80 quid fine duhhhh

and B. as far as i new you had recieved the logbook and everything was fine therefore as far as I'm concerned i was not in breech of any laws had i been i would have sorted something out

and if they dont like that ill get my solicitor out ill take it too court gits can sit on a fat one if they think they are getting my money

I got a tax reminder for my old scooter that i'd sold over a year before and my old Mk3 that i'd sold 4 months before.

They're just trying to pinch pennys, some idiot must fall for it cause they never stop trying

i always copy the V5 before sending them off now as I've had too many £80 fines I'm not liable for.

basically i have a pre-designed letter saying incompetent idiots and staple a copy of the v5 with a date i sent it, obviously i post it with no stamp!

I keep getting tax reminders/intention of prosecution notices for my old kia every 6 months, keep telling them its scrapped and even sent them pics of it in the scrappy with no engine, glass, doors, bonnet, wheels, interior and the roof caved in and sits on top of another 3 cars. even the guy who owns the scrappy has sent them a letter about it.

Apparently it takes them anything up to a year to update records, only now this after a mate got pulled in as his private plate wasn't registered to his car and he got it off the DVLA and had been driving round with it for a few months at the time.
