keep me posted on this

If you have the donor car, all i can say is it will become apparent to you what to swap...but just as a guide for your lazyness lol:

Engine mount on drivers, gearbox mount, dogbone mount is same as 8v...

Radiator and fan,

Complete exhaust system inc. downpipe and cat,

Fuel Pump,

Engine wiring harness (includes wiring to headlamps),

Immobilisor chip inside key, immobilisor box (located under steering column) and code reading coil (located around ignition switch),

Clocks,

Driveshafts should remain the same, but just in case the splines differ going into the front 16v hubs...change those too!

Be sure to change the cambelt, waterpump, AUX belt if need be, and give it a service: leads, plugs and oil/oil filter if your feeling generous.

I can't stress this enough, so if anyone is considering this...be mindful of the following:

1.) You check your fusebox type before you buy a conversion donor! 1998+ mk4's had a mk4/5 fusebox style and uses colour coded plugs that match the interior loom (i.e. red to red, blue to blue etc)

2.) The immobilisor box may lose it's ability to store the code once it get's disconnected from the battery...you may require VW to reset this, but means the vehicle has to be with them to be able to access the ECU using a code only wolfsburg mainframe has (not seen by mechanic)

3.) Be sure you get the fuel lines the correct way round! and TAKE PHOTOS before you remove parts so you know how they went!

Drive safe Jonny!

i take it by your knowlage of this you have done it ??

apart from making sure you have all the parts was it a simple job to do if your a competent person

sorry for the late reply...i work during the day.

I've done the following conversions:

3x polo mk3 GT conversions (one due to be fitted into either a mk2 coupe or a mk3 breadvan).

1x 1.4 16v into 8v

3x polo 1.6 16v GTI's into either a mk4 or mk5.

1x 1.8 16v in a corrado.

If the shell comes with one from factory then it can be done! most of this is common sense, think about it carefully...the GTI/16v's will have uprated parts so its a case of getting the donor and making sure you replace the parts that need replacing.

GolfVR- biggest headache is making sure you get the correct loom, ecu, key and transponder/coil reader! The engine drops in, the parts all bolt in nicely...swap everything you can if your unsure (it will become apparent that some parts are the same).

Also the cambelt change is a bit of a headache without the correct tools, so make sure you know what your doing!

I've had plenty of people off the forum give me a call in my spare time and ask me questions, i dont mind helping you but i hate it when people pm me stupid questions like: "can i fit a 20v in my 16v...how much will it cost??" clearly they have no idea what they're doing or getting themselves into, so do your research, ask me if you like....but easiest way is to do what i do and just DO IT...get the parts, and work your way through.

thanks for the reply mate just making sure got a good understanding first so i can help jonny do it while he watches lol

done a couple of straight engine swaps myself and am in the middle of a 2ovt into a mk2 golf so am confident just wanted to double check .

also the donor car wont be bought as its not for sale so need to go and take the bits off

again thanks for the help mate

i know where this, "donor" car(s) is :ninja: .

any good parts left on them johnny? that you havnt already snatched
