Vr6 = better noise 1.8t = more tuneable,depends what you want to do/with it

VR^ everytime, so much cooler than turbos

had a mk3 vr and a passat b5 20vt

and I'm getting a mk3 again just for the noise!

1.8t all the way, much better rev range can get double the power for not much pennies.

vr6 is noise only, is 170bhp impressive for a big heavy 2.8? NO!

1.8t lump can take reliably upto 350bhp on standard internals - 240-250 bhp is easily made for under £800.

personally i prefer a mk3 golf than a mk4 but the 20vt is a better engine for driveability, maybe fit a 20vt in a mk3?

or buy an ibiza 1.8 20vt! lol! :ninja: i know of a mucho cheap one.... :paranoid:

VR6's are stupidly bad on fuel too. My daily Jap Crap's a V6, and I laughed when I Golf VR6 owner told me what they got to the gallon (28mpg on a good day, I get 33mpg on an average day and as good as my Polo on a long run).

Do you want pub figures? Pick the 1.8T.

I would go for the VR6.

VR6 is fugly... VR6 in a MK2, now you're talking my language  *purrs*

vr6 mk2

Yeah they are sweet as, my friend done an engine conversion vr6 in a mk2 was awesome!

What does a vr6 mk3 do in mpg then? id rather have a vr tbh

my mate does as low as 17mpg in his, probably encourages you more to drive it hard because of how nice they sound when they hit 4krpm onwards.

they do sound good but it depends what you want, go for a 1.8t if you want bigger power to tune a vr6 it will cost alot more potentionally!

having owned vr6 and done a mk2 vr6 conversion also several 1.8t's it has to be 1.8t all the way. vr6's are underpowered and too heavy imo.

speaking from actual experience that is.

which conversion needs less cutting and welding to the engine bay?

what would win in say a drag and a twisty bend competition? vr in straight line and 1.8t in twistys?

neither if we're talking mk2 golf?

the 1.8t in my ibiza will bolt into a mk2/3 golf complete with subframe, steering rack, lower arms, cross member and brakes with no more than 12 bolts. the subframe, rack, lower arms, cross member and mounts are all the same as mk2/3 golf.

the vr6 is the same but you need to 'notch a bit of the drivers side chassis leg as the bottom pulley catches it but again to bolt up no more than 1 hour and 12 bolts.

Vr for the noise all day long.. i own a 20vt myself but miss me vrs had 6 in total, 4 in mk2s, 2 mk3s.. go for the 2.9 vr in a mk2 with cams and i think they sound n go the nuts.. Add a charger and you have an animal on the road..

But it all depends how much power u wanna get out of the car??

20vts are much easily tuneable.. Main reason why i got one coz I wanted some high power figures..

in standard form vr6 pips it on the straight but wallows through the turns, but chuck a £280 remap on the 1.8t and the vr6 has no chance.

my 200bhp 1.8t wets on my mates 215bhp vr6 everywhere!

asking about a standard mk3 golf vr6 and a standard 1.8t in a mk4 golf. sraght line and twistys?

I would of said the vr..

only reason i ask is because me and my grandad might buy a mk4 golf and put 1.8t in it as the carfor cheap is only 1.4 16v  or id buy a vr instead but don want massive fuel cost even though i wont rag either all time time only when i need to overtake is when i put the foot down.

I have had a VR (OBD2) and a 1.8T (well in a leon cupra form)

The VR sounded the nuts and went reasonably well, I brought and sold the cupra when i had the VR.

The big but now is that the VR's are getting long in the tooth now and have to have big money spending on them (timing chains, and rust), plus people want silly money for them, if they are anything but really old first gen golf's

At the moment there is not too much in price to buy, but running costs are different. I got my vr down to single didgits on mpg, drive like a granny and you can get near 30 for mixed driving, 70 on the motorway you get near 34-36, but in the 1.8t i was gettig near 10mpg more.

I was looking to get a VR again, but have decided against it, just not worth it. I will be getting another cupra, spending more on it but getting a much newer lower milage car that is more tunable

may aswell buy a mk4 1.8t which needs tlc, may work out cheaper and less hassle? might have different engine mounts and a few other bits n bobs that will need swapping over anyway for it to handle the power.

how costly is a mk4 golf 1.8t to tune then and what would the powr gains be? assuming alot cheaper than a vr. oh and would mk3 golf leathers out of a vr fit in a mk4 golf?

Edited by acg1990

few of the 1.8t mk4's came with leather recaros mate, decent remap and you should see well over 200brake, upgraded turbo etc your talking big money if you want to take it serious but they have alot more potential in terms of cost compared to a VR6T or supercharging....

cool but if it didnt come with leathers would they fit? so a remap, exhaust and filter an fmic with dump should see 230-240bhp then maybe add cam of not to expnsive?
