I pm'ed Panda and Sally at the time of it happening, not sure if they have the time logs on msn on.

It would have been for about 3 mins and about 2 mins between this, as I kept telnetting apache until it responding, then posted on the forum to let you know..

You could look in the apache error log file? If you have loads of entried in there then you have other issues.

no sign of any errors around that time and plenty of normal looking activity in the access logs for those times too. I'm not going to worry about it to be honest unless it happens again.

Telnet to 80, 25 couldn't be made. But you could ping it..

Hope this helps, and you don't ignore this one.. As a webadmin myself, its always good to know why your site went down. If you have a dedicated server, call the people that host it and ask them!

I know it was only 6 minutes, and people prob dont care, but you would want to know why to prevent it.

We use siteuptime at work. Its a few quid and it will email you when the site couldn't be contacted. I'm sure there are UK equivelents.

still none the wiser as to why that happened, no errors in apache error logs at that time and plenty of activity in the access logs. What error did you get when trying to telnet to it? just a timeout or port unreachable or something?

I will report it to the hosting people (although there's nothing in their status logs which are usually pretty good). Also going to make a few changes to the apache config to make sure it's not reaching it's max processes or something but I'd expect to see things in the error log if that was happening...

ok in that case it sounds like a networking issue if nothing was reachable. A reboot would be fairly obvious, that's definitely not what happened. uptime is 212 days :) Waiting to see what the hosting people say.
