Audi 100 2.0 8v Engine Into Mk2 Square

Featured Replies

right I've measured everything up and the audi engine looks to fit but i was wondering if the polo 5 speed gearbox fits the engine due to the audi gearbox not being useable also would i be better off using the injection system from the audi or the twin 40 dellortos that i was saving for the original engine

thirdly i have a 268/264 schrick for the 1.3 engine would this fit the audi engine or would i have to sell this and buy another one

Not alot of point in fitting that engine tbh, it will be alot of work for not much better power then fitting a g40/gt lump, which is alot easier.

not really as the full audi 100 will cost me £150 where as a g40 conversion is about 1k + fitting. I've had a mechanic look over it and he says not much work to it, he says that we'd have to cut out a small box section in the inner wing, make new engine mounts and then depending on which way i go (inj/carb) loom or linkage modifications and not much more

I dont think it is as simple as your mechanic has made it out to be though mate, pretty sure the polo gearbox wont fit the audi block as audi engine is a tall block, polo engine is a short block. Thats where the difficulty is cos you have to start chopping the n/s chassis leg about, sort the driveshafts out etc. Plus a 2.0 8v isnt a particulary good engine to use performance-wise anyway. just my 2 pence worth!

i know what you are saying gearbox wise would there be any other gearbox i could use, i trust the mechanic as hes done many conversions in his time, says he'll even get a vr6 into it if I've got the money but I'm wanting a cheap conversion and i think i could see a healthy 150 bhp from this engine with a few mods without spending loads on it

anyway I'm basicly looking for info on things that will fit, as the engine physically fits so the rest wont be too bad

Not sure on other gearboxs mate, i think i read that some company made bellhousing conversion plates for a golf box to fit a polo engine, but not the other way round. I think the position of the brake master cylinder might cause you a few head aches aswell, unless youve got a LHD?

Looking forward to a build thread with lots of pics is all I can say.

Me too! :smirk:

this guy has done/is doing a tall block conversion.

to be honest, without a subframe and serious suspension mods i wouldn't even consider it. the front suspension will not take well to the noticeably heavier block and gearbox, so the larger engine will have a detrimental effect on the handling, any additional performance you get will be worthless.

theres a good reason why tall block conversions are not commonly done, its not that you are the first one to think about it. most turn out to be frankenstein cars, as the tall block really doesnt suit being in the front of such a light car.

personally i'd have chosen a small block 1.6 and focused my efforts on the suspension, you will have a far better car with the same cash input.

by all means prove the people who have tried in the past wrong.

You will be much better off with a 1.6 on injection, pretty sure mine would piss on a 2.0 8v

Won't the Audi engine be longitudinal mounted anyway? If so, you may as well get a 2L 8v out of a golf which will be the same but set up for transverse.

it is longitudinally mounted in the audi which is why i was wanting to know if any other gearboxs fit but as you say the golf 2l 8v engine is pretty much the same so the gearbox from that could poss fit???

as for how heavy the new engine is ill be weighing both of them and if needed will reduce the weight of the front of the car fibre glass panels and removal of battery to the rear

It sounds a bit of a false economy tbh! Stick with the small blocks, the AEE is more than ample in a light mk2!

agreed, if you are going to the extent of fabricating mounts and driveshafts, atleast use an ally block 16v ford or vauxhall lump. weight is the killer in these little cars, no matter what weight saving you do elsewhere, you will always be better off with a lighter engine to start with.

i wont keep going on, good luck with the project fella, i hope you follow it through.

good luck in finding shocks and springs that will balance the flyweight chassis to the big engine, plus the single macpherson strut mounting will be a serious weak point. if you're methodical and consider fitting a subframe then you should be able to get it to work. Still the car will be quite out of balance and the brakes will need a serious upgrade, you'll have massive potential to understeer! you'll need at least 239 discs on the front plus a servo.

The 2.0 8v is not really a preferred choice, should make some good torque low down but a well tuned, light 1600 would probably match it. power to weight ratio is the most effective way of improving performance

i doubt it will be possible to fit dellortos to the engine, they'll need to occupy the same space as the brake master cylinder/servo. The 8v tall blocks are 'leant backwards' not forwards like the small MH engines or 1.6AEE/ABU engines. you'll probably have to fit a pedal box if you want to over come this, which are expensive!!

Sorry to sound so negative, but if you're willing to give it a go and are committed then good luck!
