My 1991 Polo Gt

Featured Replies

got this GT off here,

178k on the body, engine is a replacement with around 100k on it

the engine/exhaust is completely standard and it pulls really well, compared to my old GT which had pretty much everything usual GT mod done to it, its strange driving around with out a loud exhaust in my ear!

body is extremely clean no massive dents and no rust!, as so is the interior(feel kind of bad about planning to strip it out!)

only mods iv done so far is red pinstripe tape around the bumpers instead of the silver stuff and iv just finished fibreglassing the battery tray as that was rotten

no sterio unfortunatly but il get round to getting one fitted

its been lowered 40mm and is on mini G60 steals with uniroyal(i think) tires

this GTs mods are going to be based around the engine first as the tyres are good il be keeping the steels for now

I'm unsure about the splitter and it needs a back to black asap!

plans are

GT 8k chip

Dewedge the TB(any guides about?)

4branch manifold+straight through and single round back box

strip the rear interior

(hope andy doesnt mind me using his pics)

ok what engine mods are bevst bang for buck the airbox is already drilled, i was thinking poloace chip?

any power gains from the golf afm? anyone got any links on setting it up etc?

cheers

Silver is nice! 8-)

Where did you get the red tape for the bumpers?

  • Author

halfords 8-) looks like the proper stuff aswell imo il get ipcs up tomorow

they were the previous owners pictures, i had a laugh at them too haha.

get some serious polishing on that beastie and it should come out alright as it looks quite dull and faded there but thats expected with a high miler shell

splitter looks alright from the front but a bit silly from the side view as it looks like the front end is gurning with the back lip of the bumper no longer meeting up.

personally just get a 4 branch system and exhaust and do the throttle body, 8k chips are all well and good but if you hit it often your probably going to have to do the headgasket soon with it being so cold and the previous owner probably ragging it before selling it (as his little handy b shows )

  • Author

yea defo getting a 4 branch, had one on my old gt, pulls harder at higher revs then this one due to it.

any guides for the tb? swear i saw one on time

headgasket seems to be solid as there is no over heating and the car was sat around for a few weeks, we all love a good handbrake turn!

not saying the headgasket is going dude, but if you rag it up to 8k all the time it will bite the dust alot sooner haha

there was a guide, just had a look an its not in the faq section anymore tho

Good on you mate, the interior is super clean from this car... I bought the front seats as a replacement for my shagged ones from Max_Crox on here, then swapped them with Andy for his hockenheims which are now on my car. i think andy took the seatr covers off and washed them, i had a shock when i saw them!

Factory tints too :)

think it's lowered 50mm all round, best to have a look over on polo3 as thats where most of his details were up about it.

Look after her ;)

What size are the tyres?

Keep the orange indis and nick the G40 lights off of your mates Geneis Polo he'll never know if you swap yours with his :paranoid::lol:

Those bumpers need a serious going over with some back to black, we've got some stuff at work which is silicone based iirc? I'll just get them to order me some up and we'll get your car looking the dogs danglies mate 8-)

cuda put your pics up!

get the bumpers black and a good polish

and new rear wheel bearings after that handbrake turn

yea haha cheers i think i got some pound land special knocking about somewere it aint great but its sooo cheap.

going to strip the back out tomorow obviously il be keeping the interior for when i come to sell it! its incredibly clean as is the whole car.

tyres are 195/45/14s iirc, they grip good! the grill and orange indies will be staying i thinks, il photoshop some g40 rears on and see what they will look like

got my onus coming up with next months pay cheque so thats going on a 4branch!

Tom, glad you like the car, was pleased that it went to a good home. No worries on the pics, use away (sorry about the handbrake parking, it was gravel tho :D ).

Tyres are Uniroyal Rain Sports and after getting then quite a few friends have got them on other cars, they don't lose grip in the wet and the car doesn't really lose grip in anything other than 1st! They're also a lot cheaper than the Eagle F1s that I've got on my Audi.

It does pull pretty well for stock, as I said, it never felt out of its depth against the Audi and on the rare occasion that I got to take it out of the city I really enjoyed it. I did spend a lot of time setting it up to get the timining etc. spot on and it's got new ignition parts bar the coil and new oil, always makes a car feel better.

Funnily enough I ran it for a while with no interior in, amusingly made no difference to cabin noise or weight realy but it could swallow a mountain bike (in the summer) so I was chuffed.

I'd have thought the 4 branch, chip and even a head and cam would do well, I was looking into this as I want to get involved in a local car club and do sprints and hillclimbs and a 90+bhp GT would have been ideal, as it was the offer of this BM came up so plans changed. I was alos looking into an ABD from a local breaker, 60k engine complete for £100! Can't argue with that!

Enjoy.

  • Author

yea true, its a good car mate, youve looked after it well, I'm probly going to ABD it over the summer maybe and get the head ported and polished if i do also

  • Author

new pics with the red stripe and a soaking in back to black!

front bumper is being stubborn so il have to find some more potent stuff

pics up in first post

Great work Tom! A shame I never had the energy to do that. Looks ten times better! It's a little strange seeing a car I used to own, not had one sold on a forum before and so never seen what the next owner has done. ABD with some sorting will be great. Get the internals and fly lightened and balanced at bassett down balancing to make it rev even better!

Looks tidy matey

  • Author

cheers yea guna have to crack out the heat gun i thinks, debating bike carbs or an ABD for a summer project??
