Feel Like Such An Idiot

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I set out yesterday to fit my new wheel. Followed all the instructions, got the airbag off fine, un screwed the old steering wheel, pulled it off and there was a small crack sound and a gold metal rod popped out ( which i have kept just incase ). Didn't think too much of it so I continued. When I pulled the wheel off it also split this circular plastic component which had alot of coils in, and this also came away from the steering column. It used to clip in at the bottom back into the steering column but for some reason it won't push back in anymore but I didn't thikn too much into this at the time.

So I put the boss on and tightend it hard to keep the black plastic circle thing in place, even though it still didn't seem to be tight and flush as it was before. Then there was a new problem in that the horn kept going off due to short circuiting and contact with a screw at the back. This was sorted by connecting the new horn and steering wheel. Everything seemed fine until I turned 90degrees in either direction which would cause a spark on that screw at the back on the steering column which would make the horn go off again. It also felt a bit scratchy with the loose plastic circular thing at the back which had the coils in.

I decided today to put some ductape on the screws to stop them contacting so I could drive the car until I could take it to a garage. I pulled the boss off and all of a sudden theres another crack but nothing is broken. I put ductape on, seal everything back up to how it was and now the horn continuously goes off, and the horn push doesn't work after I've checked all the wiring.

The worst problem is now when I turn the steering wheel it really strains the steering colum where the indicator stalks come out of causing the plastic to come apart from each other and it really is just a mess.

I just can't help thinking that this was all due to the black circular plastic which held the coil in coming apart and also the gold rod which fell out, but I don't have a clue how to get round this, and all of my mates who usually assist me with cars are back home and I am at uni.

I would love to take this car to a garage but I can't drive it without destroying things further and I really don't know what to do.

Please could anyone give me some advice

or if anyone wouldn't mind helping me in the Birmingham area I will pay in money and not just beer/pizza tokens etc.

Thanks, Indy

I don't think this was meant to happen, but I'm not sure

sounds like you have taped the two cables for the horn together (making it a full circuit)

but there was a point where it was working fine apart from when the steering wheel was turned left or right, almost as if it was contacting with something everytime the wheel turned. It likes to decide what it wants to do, like earlier on it was going off as soon as the boss was tightened.

I am not sure if I am meant to take off this casing with the airbag coils inside it. It makes sense to as there are no connections for the horn on it and it would stop the problem of the steering column breaking everytime i turn.

mate i've got the exact same problem with my mk4.

thanks to that coil thing i've had to put the old steering wheel on.

i now have no horn,

no airbag.

an airbag light on (which i've been told by a bloke at vw that will fail an MOT)

a horrible scratchy noise when i turn the wheel

i have to manually turn the indicators off when i've made a turn.

AND the casing cracks apart when the wheel turns a certain way.

I'm well and truly Fcuked!!!

HELP HELP HELP!!!

I never seen this thread before, but I had the exact same problem, I guessed the coilly thing was for the airbag and I completely removed it by cutting the coil and taking the plastic piece off. There was a fault with my airbag sensor before as the light continuously stayed on so I was not bothered about cutting it off. I has the same problem with my horn, I though it was my boss playing up as it was a momo but a couple of years old. I never did fix my horn and was going to fit a push button on the dash for a separate air horn to pass its mot.

no1 seems to know the cure for this. i still don't have mine sorted.

i've ben through 2 boss's that all seem to be WRONG!?

no1 got any ideas?

I have all this sorted.

What you have to do is make sure the boss and plastic cylinder thing sit totally flush. This will stop the horn going off.

With regards to the casing cracking as you turn the wheel, just cut the black plastic notch which is catching to stop it from happening and really tighten all the bolts on the steering column surround.

With regards to the indicators, I don't know of a single person who's indicators cancel perfectly with an aftermarket wheel. Mine cancel most of the time but sometimes they don't.

IT CAN BE SORTED!!!

I had all the above problems but thanks to Raj1980 on this forum, he rang me and talked me through how to sort it all and now it is fully working without having to take it to a garage or anything.

Really really is a simple fix.

PM me with any questions as I spend most of my time on edition these days!

nice one matey! will have another bash when the correct boss arrives. lol

I pulled the boss off

Way to get a promotion!

..Sorry i couldnt resist, I'm so immature... :doubt:

lol i had the same problem when i did mine so i ripped it all out thinkin it was just the air bag stuff lol how wrong i was its the horn and air bag light in the dash! so i put the new wheel on and then had 2 rewire all the horn 2 a nw location and as 4 the air bag ligh on the dash i just got a black marker pen and no1 can tell its even on lol

lol I've done the same thing hahaha

cant you just put a resistor across the air bag cable, no idea of a resistance but I am sure you could measure the air bag and make one up to be near on the same.

Don't measure the resistance of airbag. Possibility of setting it off!!

lol fair enough try a few different resistors then and see which one works doubt you would damage anything

Your meant to plug the resistor into the airbag plug/wire thing but before you re-connect the battery.

  • 4 weeks later...

Mine cancels both way, but when indicating right to go onto a roundabout, it cancels when i slightly turn left to enter the roundabout. Bit annoying but i've gotten used to it
