just wondered if anyone has got into any bother by stripping out the back half of their car? MOT time and the fuzz? what actually is the deal with it i was told you need to retain the seatbelts but if theres no seats.........

hmm I'm not 100% sure but i thought if you took the back seats out, seatbelts had to be removed too, and then u had to declare to the DVLA that the vehicle is now a 2 seater?

but like i said, I'm not sure.

you dont need the seat belts you dont need anything to pass an MOT... its one way of getting round an mot if you hav a broken seat belt just take the seat out....

I've got no back seats or seatbelts and had no probs mot time.

it was put down as an advisory, but not one that needs sorting if that makes sense?

thought if you mot'd it without back seats or belts it declaired as a two seater

that would make sense to me as well. best give the dvla a call

the floor pan/ chassis is not a two seater so makes no odds iirc. i had one seat in my old g40 and was stopped by the police on numerous occasions and was often asked why i had one seat but there was never a legality issue.

as above, if you have seats, they have to have belts but no other requirements. i've mot'd 10 + cars of mine with no rears without a problem.

i left the belts in my old gt when i stripped it out coz i couldnt be assed fuckin about puttin them back in

if stopped just say your doing your bit for the environment by making the car lighter and thus more fuel effiecient!

my gt has no rear seats or belts, you need either neither or both for MOT. not told the dvlajack as its a 4-seat shell, that with 3 bolts can go back to 4 seats.

If you aren't going fully stripped i would leave them in tbh. You won't gain any performance and there will be a time when you could really use them.

honestly, i ran my Polo without rear seats for a couple of months as I had to take them out for the MOT (fixed front buckets) and it was pretty annoying when I wanted to take mates out or something.

mates weigh too much.

i got stopped by the 5-0 with only one seat, i dont even have a dash in, and everythin was ok, the only thing is.......

How secure do the clocks have to be at MOT time? as mine are held in with cable ties and electrical tape

That would fail i think because of safety reasons

I'm not aware of any reason you have to take the belts out with the seats. I generally test the kit car as a 4 seater despite it having 6 belts.

So it sounds like MOT isnt really any bother. But insurance? Do they need to know you have no rear seats/ a stripped out car?

well your not adding anything, could say you were hauling large goods

It's a mod, so yes. Doubt it'll make a lot of difference though, just tell them you took them out to make it easier to move stuff.

As has been said,

It won't make a blind bit of difference on the MOT, just so long as both seats AND belts are removed. All they check is if the installed seats are safe and if the belts for them are safe too.

You will need to tell your insurance that the back seats have been removed (stripped interior) though this shouldn't raise the premium by more than about 1 to 2%, at least that was how I found the response at Adrian Flux.
