I know it's cliché but they should catch some real criminals. All of the police i have dealt with in Leeds are wankers and think they run shit, and traffic cops are the same with bigger ego's. I hope you told him exactly what you thought of him when they took your car away. Some of them need a good kick in for sure. I have yet to find a helpful police officer, even when i was a victim of an armed robbery they still spoke to me like they had a chip on their shoulder. Hard to have respect for the police force when all of them you see are wastemen. Things like this reinforce my lack of respect for the police.

sorry about not replying to any of the posts, i went out last night to get my mind off all of it and have been with my girlfriend to cheer me up lol

this morning when i woke up it really hit me that the fuckers have my car :'[

i appreciate all the help & support everyone has been doing, iv taken it all in and have been looking into al this myself, everyone iv spoken to says its rediculous, & that i shouldnt have even given my keys over

i didnt swear at the officer btw lol

i was calm & was jsut more gutted than anything else, i gave facts & said its passed its mot etc, all parts are legal & approved

as for whats been said above, i wasnt given any paper work, and he didnt give me any clear reason for siezing the car apart from it was dangerous

he tested the suspension by rocking the car, & pushing down on the wing :/

he then had the cheek to show me how much movement his cop car had in his suspension!

I'm being charged 150 quid for the flat bed, even tho normally they drive it themselves normally so they dont normally have to use a flat bed!

i phoned the compound, its up there but cant tell me when its getting inspected, only tat its tomoro by someone from the police

Write a word-for-word report of Exactly what happened, get down the citizens advice bureau, and file an official complaint to the cop shop.

I cant believe they didnt give you and paperwork they HAVE to! You should of also got the officers 'number'.

please note their are different rules for mot's and police

for example at the moment a number plate can pass if its made out of cardboard......but on the road you will get stopped for constuction and use laws and get fined!!!! go figure

When they were confiscating off road bikes etc, and scooters for no MOT or whatever, they were getting ragged around the compounds.

I'm surprised to hear you didn't get given any paperwork, you'll have a job to claim your car back if you haven't - although technically you can receive it through the post later on.

Did you stop straight away when they tried to pull you over? The police can seize your car if you fail to stop, not to mention if you were driving without due care and attention or the vehicle is not showing as being insured in your name. Have you declared the non-standard wheels and suspension to your insurer? If not that's also grounds to have your car seized.

Also without wanting to sound rude, the fact that you told the police it had passed its MOT like that won't necessarily cut the mustard, bear in mind that people lie to the cops 24/7 and the police are hard-wired to assume people aren't telling them the truth (I'm not saying you're lying, but just what will have gone through the copper's mind).

Threats of suing and complaints are also generally a waste of time. Unless the officer has broken the law (and it doesn't sound like he has) you're wasting your time. Only about 10% of complaints made against the police ever make it through the police complaints commssion filtering, and even fewer of those ever turn out to be grounds for a real complaint.

Best thing you can do is have all your documentation (insurance, MOT, both parts of licence and receipts for wheels/suspension) ready and take them to the station where your car is once the inspection has been done. It's a shitty situaion but the best and most realistic way of getting your car back asap. When you do get the paperwork I'd also be interested to know the offences that the PC listed on the seizure form.

I carry my extendable wheel brace in my door card, nothing illegal about it. A police woman actually told me how it was a good idea as it could be used in self defence if the situation required it, but it's not illegal as you're not purposely carrying a telescopic baton around with you.

If you hit someone with it you would could be done for carrying a weapon. It should be in the boot of your car.

The only real thing thats useful in the event of an attack, and that you can legally have by your side in your car, is a crook-lock. Thats why you can buy them now that are basically just a baseball bat with a bit of a lock on!

Personally I would never carry anything to that effect. Its just going out with the wrong attitude I'm my opinion.

This whole car confiscation thing is grim. Although I have less sympathy for people with poke and stretched tyre as it is just the abuse of a loophole really. And leads people to run unsafe tye/wheel combinations. Having your wheels stuck out of the side of your car might look cool but its not the safest thing ever. Although not exactly dangerous.

exactly doug. I change my wheels that often, it's handy to keep my extendable wheel brace to hand. Plus I check my wheel nuts regularly.

You don't even have to use it to be found guilty of an offence. Having anything made, adapted, or intended to be used as a weapon on your person (or in your car) can technically be an offence and the law requires you to prove that you have a lawful excuse for carrying it.

Carrying tools is fine but best keep them in the boot, the mechanic excuse won't always work. I stopped a car at 2 in the morning one day last week and the driver had 2 crowbars and a balaclava on the passenger seat. His excuse was that he had been using the balaclava to ride his motorbike and the crowbars were for changing a wheel bearing on his car. By extreme coincidence he just happened to have a long history of stealing cars and couldn't explain why he needed his crowbars to fix a wheel bearing on his car in a dark and lonely cark park at 2 in the morning. He's now back in prison, as is a taxi driver I know of who kept a stanley knife in his door compartment and another one under his seat in case someone tried to steal his takings.

Courts take a dim view of anything that might be a weapon although personally I think you should be allowed to use force against people who rob you, but I don't make the law

From a professional point of view, shouldn't you use a torque wrench to chech they are tight? I know I dont (unless using lightweight nuts etc).
