Meh,when i was 18,i regularly used to break the ton - sometimes there'd be a convoy of us all sitting at 110 and none of us had our licences a year.

And I'm not talking about a 735i here,this was when there were Hillman Imps on the roads and the steering wheel/column of my '83 Escort would be shaking violently.

Not wearing a seatbelt is a big one with me though as thats what killed my mate when he was involved in a head-on (not his fault) and hitting the steering wheel snapped his aeorta (sp) clean off!

when everyone gets off their high horse i'm sure 99% of forum users have broken the speed limit unknowingly or not and i'm sure most of them have cracked a ton.

You make it sound so casual, "cracking the ton". Speed is a relative issue. It's the speed that you are travelling towards other objects on the road that causes the danger. (And the associated reaction times). I would say that the majority of us may be breaking speed limits on the motorway, but I'm never going faster than the other cars around me. It's the idiot who is going considerably faster than everyone else that is alarming - this is where 100+ is completely inappropriate. Most people on the motorway are not doing that sort of speed.

And before you think I'm being some holier than thou arsehole, yes, I have "cracked the ton", as you put it, but that was 165kph on a de-restricted section of the German Autobahn in a car that could easily cope with it, and in the context of other traffic doing similar speeds.

very true but what every one is missing here is the road conditions, if people don't wanna ware a seat belt then who's fault is it if they are killed in a crash? every one knows what can happen if they don't ware one, and speeding? we've all done it and i couldn't give a shit if i see some one's doing 140+ down the m6 if its not busy and conditions are good, but when people are driving like dicks in the conditions we've been having recently then they deserve to loose there license before some one gets hurt.

totally understand that your not been a holier than thou arsehole, but it doesnt matter wether the car can cope with it or not, I'm sure it wouldnt cope if it hit something, it might be able to handle doing that sort of speed, i.e. engine can perform and maintain that speed with ease, but no car is designed to withstand 100+mph impact, granted i also did 100+ on a few select occasions but i was under no illusion it wasnt dangerous, regardless of the car i happened to be in

We take it for granted now, but back in the 60s there were no such things as anti-lock brakes, airbags and skid prevention systems, or even disc brakes and seat belts in some cases and not to mention the tires they used back then

speed may not cause crashes but people who pull out on a motorway when they cant see you whilst your doing 100+ will end up in a crash, not always your speed or your skill level that causes crashes, its normally other peoples lack of skill and awareness, you or i may be confident at those speeds but how confident are you in other peoples skills to look in thier mirrors before they pull out on you etc, I'm not slagging off speeders by any stretch of the imagination, i speed, and still do, its fun afterall and theres a little thing inside everyone who likes cars, that thinks i want to see what this is capable of, i just do it in the knowledge that I'm endangering myself and I'm under no illusion that I'm endangering others too

It would be interesting to see the driver's instructor view, the very person who taught them to drive and found one of his/her learners had done over a ton, no seatbelt and got a ban.
